Thanks for all the responses guys, it really does pay to scrutinise people posts.

I'm going to go with Powergen, at least for the near future anyway. I have applied online and the savings are £145/year right away. It remains to be seen how smoothly the changeover goes, but I'm willing to give it a bash

I'll review the situation again in several months time, so we'll then go from there :D

    Thanks again, cheers

PS. Oh, and the Tesco Clubcard points were a nice surprise. Not only do we shop there, but I get my petrol there too. Something for nothing almost
Debt-free as of 01.10.08. I will never have a CC again and I'm "in the black"

We applied to switch from Scottish Gas to Powergen in October. It took them 3 months to transfer our electricity, we're still waiting for our gas to be switched over. Fed up phoning both companies as both just blame the other. OH (who does all the phoning to complain) can now recite their standard chat back to them. Anyway, 2 weeks ago, OH phoned Scottish Gas and got the usual excuses from them about why our gas han't been transferred. After insisting (again) that he wanted to speak to someone in authority he managed to speak to someone in their "Escalations Team" (didn't even know such a team existed!) who agreed that the situation was ridiculous and should have been sorted out long before now. He blamed Powergen and the gas transporter company for the problem. Turns out the gas transporter is another British Gas company! He promised to call us back later that week and guess what! he hasn't. :wall:

Letters of complaint sent off yesterday by recorded delivery to both Powergen and Sottish Gas giving them until 30/4 to sort it out or it's being referred to Energywatch. Fingers crossed we get some action this time!

So if you're planning to switch to Powergen be prepared for hassle especially if it's British gas you're moving from ...

I take it you mean Transco, they are now separate from the British Gas you pay bills too.

I remember when they first split into separate companies, as Transco and British Gas were on the same site, you had to sign agreements that as you work for one company you couldn't talk to the other about business matters.

I just repaired the computers for both companies but still had to agree not to disclose information.

Trasco are a pretty efficient company, British Gas however isn't.

Transco the people who transport most of the gas is now owned by National Grid Transco plc.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

No it's not Transco, Scottish Gas were very specific about that but they didn't tell us who the gas trasporter actually is. We've subsequently found out that each gas transporter company has an allocated range of meter point reference numbers and our falls within that for British Gas Connections Ltd. It also confirms its them at the bottom of our online bill.

Have a look at EQUIgas and EQUI power. They are a fair trade not for profit company and have been highlighted by MSE. In particular gas and electric charges a the same regardless of your means to pay ie prepay meter rates are the same as monthly DD.

Although they don't initially appear in Uswitch comparisons, if you select the compare all option they come out as the cheapest supplier. I'd ignore their service rating of 2 by Uswitch. I found them very helpful when I phoned.

I too rarely use my Gas fire as CH keeps us cosy. I have a large 4 bed semi and all the rooms are larger than average. Our gas bill per month for the last few years with BG was £29.50 pm. Electric £24.50. My oven is Electric and my hob Gas. I also use a dishwasher and tumble dryer. Its interesting to see what others are paying for their energy bills .

WOW!!!! I wish i had your house. I have a small 2 bed semi (council) and i have to pay £40 a month gas and my house still isnt warm. I have complained to the council endless times, but i keep getting told that £40 is average nowadays ( i think not) and you have just proved to me this isnt so.
Off to phone the council now :D

Funny enough the Council House I was brought up in had lousy CH. The house was always freezing i.e. you went to bed with your dressing gown on and got dressed under the quilt in the morning. In my previous house which was a mid terrace we put in a new heating system and the house was always too hot and our bills were very cheap. This house the heating system is about 30 years old. The DG and loft insulation really help and I rarely have radiators on in two of the bedrooms as it just gets too hot.
