Air France claim denied due to extraordinary circumstances?

The flight delay with Air France resulted in a 24 hour delay at my final destination. Air France said the delay was due to a passenger not boarding and this passengers luggage had to be removed from the plane. This took 74mins and we missed our connecting flight (also with Air France). I lost one days pay as I arrived home 24 hours late. They told me this is considered "extraordinary circumstances" and denied my claim for compensation. Can you tell me if I can disagree with them? The flight was already late when we boarded so I find their reason inexplicable. Many thanks for any advice.
