What if Airline Claim Bad Weather

I am watching your television programme which has described the EU Airline Delay Compensation.
This is of particular interest because in December 2012 my family flew from Heathrow to Hong Kong and we were delayed about 4 hours.
So it would seem that we entitled to a reasonable amount of compensation.
Here is my concern though.
On that day there was a lot of fog, and many short haul flights were delayed or cancelled because of it.
However, after about 2.5 hours of delay, watching plenty of long haul planes taking off I asked at the British Airways customer service desk why our flight appeared to be delayed by fog but other long haul flights weren't.
I was told that long haul flights weren't effected by the fog because they fly above it, but our plane was in the engineering hanger but was just leaving. We were also told that the the engineering hanger is on the far side of the airport and that the tow is slow, so it would take another hour to get the aircraft to the gate.
So the delay was down to engineering maintenance.
But all through the flight the Captain kept apologising for the delay but explained that the weather was beyond his control - in other words the airline was prepared to use the weather as a conveinent excuse.
So if I write in I suspect that they will respond saying that the delay was down to fog and therefore, no compensation is due.
Any recommendations how I should phrase the letter, or what I should do if they reject.
Cheers,
Nigel
