Flight cancelled, alternative offered

When I was going on my Honeymoon in 2010, our flight was cancelled due to the French strikes. We didn't find this out until we got to the airport. This was on a Tuesday - we were offered a flight to the same destination, Nice, on the Saturday! We were also offered a full refund or an alternative flight. We didn't want to loose out on 4 days of honeymoon, nor did we want to cancel altogether, so we took the alternative flight to Milan. However, we then had to fork out for a hotel in Milan for that evening, when we had already paid for our Nice hotel, and we had to make our own way to Nice from Milan.
Would we be entitled to claim anything back?
I only thought about this after watching tonight's programme...

How many times did Martin say "not the airlines fault"?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Maybe I misunderstood. I was thinking the airline was partly to blame as the airport staff went on strike. My mistake, no need to be sarcastic.0
