Have you ever been "Mis-dispensed "at an ATM

Options
I am only on to ask, has anyone ever had a problem witha faulty ATM?

I used a Post Office ATM (says on it owned by bank of Ireland)and as you do, I asked for cash and a printed receipt .

All of a sudden the ATM had a fit , and a green light flashed and emitted several beeps and then after around a min, it simply spat the receipt out showing that I had made a withdrawal. No money came out, and the card was swallowed. The screen displayed a message something like "This machine is out of order" .I had no idea this could happen. I had to go home, then later contact my branch and file a claim of mis-dispensing.

In all the years I have used ATM for a cash withdrawal, this has never happened, the bank were very helpful and the money was credited inside 24hrs but had to cancel my debit card and await a new one, and it kind of puts you off using one, when the bank is closed and you are needing money there and then, you don't expect it to eat your card , pin was entered correctly , and it kidded me on it had paid me .

Is this happening a lot as they have actual forms called Mis-Dispense Claim Forms lol :rotfl:

    Happens all the time...
The fact that they are windows based is a strong hint to the ability.

I deal with these all the time on a daily basis. So you are not alone.

Lets face it they are nothing but machines... And can you name one that never breaks down?

If they ran OSX, do you think we'd all be paying a 3% fee to Apple to use them? :rotfl:

However, on a serious note, it did happen to me once many years ago, NatWest ATM completely froze. I was only checking my balance, not withdrawing. Went into the branch later and they gave me my card back, probably wouldn't happen now!

That is true the Post office specific ATM ones do look just like a computer screen , and the girls who work in that PO say the card readers on their counters ( machines!) always crash as well, and it is lousy since they made them full colour, this was a first for me, interesting as I had no idea cashlines nowadays were so temperamental!

When a mis-dispense occurs, the machine will print it on the internal journal roll, so that staff can adjust the customers account if necessary the next working day!

Normally happens when a torn or worn out note gets jammed in the mechanism, and often will result in the ATM shutting down and late night call out for some unlucky staff :(

As dalesrider says, it happens all the time, I'd be very surprised if any bank with a national ATM network doesn't see this pretty much every day. It was unlucky that your card was retained so you were inconvenienced more than just a simple misdispense of less (or indeed more) cash than you should have had, but the moving parts in an ATM mean it's bound to have the occasional mechanical fault.

To answer the OP directly, no. In 30 years of using cash machines, it has never happened to me. I suppose I've been lucky.

I wonder if these machines ever dispense more than they are supposed to.

    Certainly never happened to me.

I've not had one mis-dispense but once did attempt to withdraw money from one and got my card back and waited for the money and it just didn't dispense any.

Did you get your money back?

I'm still waiting for the day I walk past one and it just starts to dispense cash and doesnt stop...!

One in a billion chance I suppose, but they ARE just machines, so you never know...!

    YES......

When someone loads the cassettes the wrong way. Puts £20's were the £10's should be.

Been on the news a few times where people have been down the street waiting to use the ATM.

Often results in people being debited for the extra cash they got :rotfl:
