Fully comp in EU

Would anyone happen to know of a car insurance company which will extend comprehensive cover to include EU driving, for holidays, days out etc.
I ask because, despite many of them claiming "full EU cover" what they actually mean is third party only. I'm sure I have had cover extended in the past, just can't remember which companies! There was always an extra charge, of course, but as long as it was reasonable, it wouldn't be too bad. It's no good paying a few quid for a day trip shopping on the ferry, only to be clobbered by the insurance.
I wonder how many go abroad thinking they are covered when in fact they are only minimum liability.

Saga and NFU give 365 day EU comp cover included in their normal policy. No need to notify them when you go. No extra charge either.

  • Aviva will do it for an extra charge, I know that as a certainty. You are right though in that most say 'Full' is only TP cover but that is only what they need to offer. I'm pretty sure some other companies will also offer it for a little bit extra.

I've just gone through the Saga quotation minefield, and they are not too expensive. Yes, again, it does say cover is extended to the EU, but it doesn't say "comprehensive" anywhere. I'll have to give them a ring and ask specifically. It's a bit ambiguous for my liking.

It actually says, "We will provide the cover shown in your schedule." Can't find the schedule though...

Found it now. Takes a bit of digging though.

You have to be over 50 for Saga.

I'm with them, only thing I don't like is that they do not cover panoramic glass roof on their glass section. (I have one) It has to be a full claim if it is broken.

Or Aviva through a broker for free comprehensive foreign use (With trip limits) and European RAC thrown in
  • Aha yes, I forget the existence of the broker haha.

Better cover through a broker with Aviva and a lot of other Insurers due to brokers tending to sell on cover rather than price

Does the 'drive another car with the owner's permission' clause include driving in the EU? I'm going to France with my car and want to share the driving with my 21 yr old son. (He has his own car and his own insurance. I know it's only TP when he's driving mine). My insurer does not insure anyone under 25 so I can't add him for the 5 days. Or can I get insurance just to cover the trip?
