I just checked Screwfix etc and yes they do sell them direct!

I note they said they ordered it from a distributor, so does that mean they use a company to order from (direct) rather then use these local stores or pick them up themselves?

Just want to make sure we word the letter correctly really, thanks.

Mid Position Valve was ordered on the 15/03/13, but this part was not available through next day delivery and had to be ordered into branch which means it comes from the distributor, the part was not available locally

as i have told you & as you have found out for yourself the part is availible, I don't know how this company works, but every other service provider has accounts with most of the local merchants to be able to go & get spares, i can understand the fan may not have been in stock & sometimes these need to be ordered, but not something like a honeywell valve, I could go to at least 12 merchants within a 10 mile radius & everyone of them will have that valve on the shelf, it is the most popular valve in GB so everyone keeps them as a stock item.

ps feel free to quote me when speaking to them, hell i'll even give you my email or phone number to pass on to them so they can contact me & I'll tell them the same thing & tell them what I think of their BS excuses
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

They may guarantee a call out within 24 hours (or whatever specified period), but that doesn't guaranteee that the boiler itself will be fixed on the first call out.
What do the T&C's of your contract say? It should be clear enough there.
Given your medical conditons, would it not be wise to have basic back-up electric heating (convector, oil filled rad, fan heater?) for such eventualities-less than the cost of about 2 months of your current insurance cover.

    Hi there

Sorry I forgot to respond to this one......

We did have a oil electrical radiator, and we borrowed another from a friend, we moved them from room to room, and of course with it also being below average cold weather for this time of year as well.
And the fact that we assumed it would be fixed as well.

    Thank you. I appreciate it.

The fan was supposedly supposed to have been ordered weeks previous, as it was playing up, where the engineer had come out twice to spray the fan before that, it was the 2nd time he came out and sprayed it when he said he will order the fan so that if it goes they will have it in stock. He got it going with some spray until it was replaced.

But yes see your point, cheers for that.

The problem with these kind of contractors is that they have to do everything via 'the system'. So if they don't have the part on the van then they have to get it ordered via the office through the 'approved supplier' network. Whereas an independent RGI would just pop down to the local merchant and get one there and then. And if they were out of stock, from the next one.

    Absolutely their position.
You could have a brand new boxed up part in your house and they still wouldn't send an engineer out to install it, because they don't have the part needed, according to their system.
Kind of makes sense that only official "approved" suppliers are used, but frustrating when the same supplier causes a delay. Wouldn't happen with your local independent, but then again, he probably isn't in a position to offer 24/7 availability either.

Who do you think should compensate you for your boiler going wrong?

It the parts take 6 days to obtain, then how can anyone get them any quicker?

Are you sure whoever was advising you could have been mistaking being without heating due to a failure of your boiler with being without energy due to a failure of the supply network?

Very poor service.. think about that whan you pay them.. pay them 65%.. see if they take you to court?
