Aw, sorry to hear about your gran. She's in a better place.Sorry for the cliche,I can't think of a nicer way to put it.

I was recently in a similar situation, we went to the funeral service but not to the bunfight/tea and sandwiches after. We were no longer close to the person who died, even though it was a next of kin relationship. The eldest sibling of the family organised a suitable floral arrangement from all of us.The ones who go in for hypocrisy and high drama supplied additional flowers and some crocodile tears... Each to their own, though.

Alzheimer's Scotland would perhaps benefit more from a donation in lieu of a showy floral arrangement,if the other family members and friends agree?

One wee thing though-to cheer you up and let you know you're not the only ones in this situation-- we were going to be in and out like the SAS, managed to sneak in the back of the crematorium just before the service started and got ready for a sharp exit at the end, only to find the exit was at the side and we couldn't get out without being spotted.

And fwiw the family members who had travelled up to Scotland for the funeral all came out with us for a lovely dinner, and we made the most of their unexpected visit.
I hope your BIL can spend some time with you and your family if he makes it up.

  • When my Father died we only had flowers from the garden on the coffin.
If anyone chooses to spend a lot of money to feed the bunnies that is up to them.
We live next to a graveyard and seen the sorry wilting flowers dotted about with the bunnies eating them whilst they are fresh.
I feel the money could be so much better spent.
  • I can undertsand the donations towards a charity But I would feel weird not turning up with flowers, so I just do both..BUT the rose is a great idea aswell!

I do think it's a litle a bit of a shame though when you know someone has paid a lot of money for say a floral spray £75upwards but your little wreath or cross £20 -£40 some how looks more expensive than what you've in act paid for it ... alot of it has to do with the flower choice a colour combination....BUT I have felt embarrissed one or twice when it some how looks like I've purposely tried to out do someone...I'm just good with flowers.... that's me

You're right about the money being put to better use BUT still I do both...
and the cute fluffy bunny rabbits are welcome to nibble the flowers I buy

Thanks for all your replies, the funeral went well with no kicks offs. FIL spoked to DH, asked how he was and hugged him so it was a pleasant surprise as to what we thought we were getting.

Everyone just had to do their own flowers so we spent £37 on a spray, we were shown the sizes by the florist and that felt the most appropriate as we knew there would be lost of flowers (lots of kids and grandkids) so we didnt want to go too big to overshadow anyone elses. Seeing all the flowers on the day we did well, similar size to others so had we gone bigger i think it would have been a bit OTT.

Thanks very much for all your thoughts and replies.

Thanks for the feedback at such a delicate time, katyag - I'm pleased things were not traumatic and that you found a compromise that suited your values and the occasion ((hugs))
