No more unnecessary clothes buying

Well it is a pretty big case, and I have a couple of storage boxes as well!

Interesting idea for a thread.
Over the last few years I've got rid of quite a lot of clothes as part of my de-cluttering, but I've still probably got too many.
I work Thursdays and Fridays, so I have a minimal working wardrobe. A couple of pairs of black trousers and a couple of tops for Thursday and a pair of jeans and a couple of other tops for Friday, which is a dress down day. My challenge that I've set myself is to keep to those clothes for the next three years until I intend to leave!
I've got my round the house clothes. Very comfortable and mostly old. I'm quite happy to wear these until they disintegrate.
I've got my cruise wear, when are my evening dresses.
Then there's everything else. Mostly casual clothes which are for going shopping, going out for the day, seeing friends, going to the hairdressers and things like that. I've got far too many clothes in this category. I really need to start wearing some of these things round the house.
Apart from evenings on cruises I never wear dresses or skirts. I have one 'day' skirt which is a denim one.
I've been a size 12 for ever, but in the last couple of years I've started to move up to a 14 for trousers. I really need to go through all the trousers (which is quite a lot) and only keep the ones that fit properly.
It's an interesting concept to do a clothes inventory. I'll be watching this thread with interest, and if I can find the time between other de-cluttering. I may even be inspired to do my own inventory.Early retired - 18th December 2014

I made myself a promise at the start of the year not to buy any new clothes unless something became beyond repair and I would only replace work clothes as I need to look smart.
I have got rid of a few clothes recently that were only suitable for ragging, which freed up room in the chest of drawers so I can see what I've got and subsequently I still have more than enough clothing regardless of the weather.
I have recently started looking in the cs but have not felt the need to buy as I've lost the need to buy something to fill an emotional gap mentality that I've had for years - thanks to the hoarding thread.

I have 3 x 'recycling' boxes full and overflowing with stuff I don't wear/ doesn't fit I went through it last week looking for a jacket I said if give someone......I parted with about 5 other items but couldn't bring myself to get rid of more. I have dresses and trousers in my wardrobe ranging from size 16-22 (I'm a 20/22 ATM but an 18 in jeans) I've been this size for quite some time so I don't know why I can't part with the stuff that doesn't fit/suit I can't actually access the wardrobe as it has boxes of clothes piled in front of itNo more unnecessary toiletries Feb 2014 INS: 24 UU: 13. This is such a good idea! I used to buy new clothes ALL the time, have cut down a lot since (she says, after buying a jumper and scarf today). My main problem is charity shops and ebay bargains - I tend to think "it's only a couple of quid, why not!" Clearly this is wrong. I must have so much stuff that I don't wear. Embarrassingly, I also have stuff at my parents house from when I was in uni (5 years ago now!)0

Please may I join?
I have one large size pine wardrobe and OH has one a bit smaller.
My wardrobe is not full of clothes completely, I use some for storage of blankets/fleece and other bits.
I have got into the habit of every few months to say everything out and on the bed. Refold and make piles from the shelf. Tops or jumpers for hot or cold weather. Charity bag for unloved items.
Last year, I decided to have more blue, purple and gray as key colours. I am finding the 3 colours mix and match well. Navy bag and a gray safe bag. The gray bag has a lock on the zip top so great if traveling (pick pockets). You cannot cut it either as it has a me ch, metal - in the lining.
I have some red clothes. I like to ware in December. My Christmas look.
Black trousers are a must in winter for going into town shopping.
In summer cropped trousers, I like the white jeans look the best.
A few summer dresses for my girly look, mainly bought for holidays in the Canaries. I have a small black shoulder bag to go with these for trips. I bought it for about £5 many years ago. So useful. If I want a short strap I put a knot in the strap. So light too.
Then a few night dresses and x2 dressing gowns. 1 pink and 1 blue
.
I also have my pj's to be seen in = 2 sets of trousers, top and matching short dressing gown/cardigan.
These are nice when on a trip = holiday park or staying with family. We have to take turns to walk the large dog at all hours. Away from home he has to go out on a lead.
Would be great for hospital too! I am prepared. Not that I am ever that ill but the day may come.
I have about 12 pairs of shoes, I have not counted them for a wile.
Most are from Clarks, in the sale.
I have not bought shoes for ages so most are a few years old.The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -
Another uniform wearer here. My husband says I have too many. Bit of a laugh considering he also wears a uniform and has a room dedicated to his stuff.
Long sleeved teeshirts to wear under the uniforms are a bit of a problem. But I've managed to put two out this week. Stains just wouldn't come out and there were definite signs of wear. I realized I bought one in 1996 and the other in 2000 during my training period. What I did find interesting was how much quality has gone down. And how the sizes have changed. The old ones were 100% cotton and one was a M and the other was a L. Now I buy an XL and they are nearly all blends.
I tend to gravitate towards a dressy look in my life. But just discovered that I have four proper skirt suits and three blazers for assorted skirts.
I could possibly only ever have to buy underwear and hosier for the rest of my life.
I have a huge problem with getting rid. Like others have said, as a child I didn't have a lot of clothes and have been buying my own since I was 15. I've tried to go for quality over quantity and really do have some nice things. I live in hope of dropping 15lbs.0 -
Ok, so, today I went shopping for middle DD
In fairness, I bought for eldest DD last month and have told youngest she can get stuff next month (although tbh once I've sorted stuff out, she will barely need anything)
Came home with 1 x track suit, 2 x dresses, 2 x leggings, 3 plain tops, 2 vest tops and 3 other tops oh and 2 x jeans a moshi monsters t shirt and a pair of leg warmers
She did need some stuff for wearing, she has 'nothing' but by nothing I ACTUALLY mean nothing available in the wardrobe
I NEED to sort out the clothes :mad:No more unnecessary toiletries Feb 2014 INS: 24 UU: 13. Mar 2014. INS: lost count, naughty step for me! UU: 80 -
I found an easy way of keeping clothes buying under control, although it was a 'by-product' of moving house. We downsized from a large 3-bed house to a small 2-bed bungalow. We have minimal storage for clothing as the rooms are small, so a lot had to go. Since we live in a rural area, 'posh' clothes aren't necessary or desirable, really, but I do have a couple of pairs of smart trousers, and half a dozen smart jumpers. I've never been a great one for shoes, but they do seem to have mounted up a bit. Since they're all in a cube box, though, they don't take up much space. So, to reduce clothing, minimising storage seems a good idea.0

Me too!I would be highly embarrassed to list my clothing owned ATM, I probably have, easily, 1000 items!
I do give stuff away to the chazzer regularly, but cannot bear to get rid of stuff I haven't worn. I haven't bought for a long time, this article gives a bit of perspective on what a waste of money hoarding clothes can be.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
