What happens say, if you pay the £100?

I'm not suggesting for a minute do it, I'm just wondering if the !!!!!!!os that infect your computer unlock it for you?

You're down £100 and your card details go all around the world and are used to empty your bank account/run up a huge credit-card bill (I assume anyway).

reinstall is the very last resort!

Thanks to all for their suggestions.

As you say - I have taken the 'last resort' path and re-installed Windows.

I still can't open/close my CD/DVD tray 'manually' - it had been weeks since I last tried to use it anyway. However it opens when I click on the drive in 'Computer' .(and closes with a gentle nudge)

Anyone any idea how that can be fixed please?

It sounds like the switch has either had it or the one on the case isn't connecting properly to the one on the drive itself.
As it's a desktop, I'd take the side off (I assume it's a tower) and just see if the CD drive's moved backwards slightly).
If it has moved, you can loosen the screws and nudge it forward (gently) until it's back in the right place.
If it has had it, you can pick up a new one fairly cheap and they are a doddle to replace. Just make sure you get the right one (SATA/IDE).
