needing insurance to buy 2nd car tomorrow

Hi all,
I'm really unsure of the best way to do this.
I already have 1 car I need to stay insured on but going to hopefully get a 2nd car tomorrow.
My insurer doesn't do multicar policies. It's specialist for my current car. Do I buy apolicy tonight online assuming I'm getting the car and cancel it if for any reason I don't get the car or use tempcover.com?
Or is my insurer likely to cover me for a 2nd car for a day to drive the car home?
I'm worried if I got the new policy tomorrow it wouldn't cover me until the next day too.
Please can someone advise? I intend to drive the car on a full policy but just need to collect it tomorrow at least.

  • Will your insurer allow a temporary additional vehicle?

Also remember you have already used your no claims bonus.

Research it tonight and phone them immediately before you drive the car. Cover should be able to start immediately.

I'm not sure. Do insurers normally do that? I totally forgot about the no claims bonus. So I'd have to pay a full premium for the 2nd car then? :(

And if you have any named drivers you may have issues at claim time. They seem to assume every is fronting :)

Main driver on 2 cars? fronting. Ive have 4 cars at the same time sometimes. But no named drivers though..

That's a pain, if I get quotes with No NCD they're about £300 more...

Don't insurers take into account a good driving history and NCD on another vehicle?

Nope, no named drivers for me :)

The NCD would explain why my current insurer quoted about 3 times as much for a 106 1.5 diesel compared to my modified current car which has a modified engine conversion and is over twice as powerful and about 7 insurance groups higher!

They do take a good driving history into account. That's why they ask "have you had any accidents, claims or convictions in the last 5 years" - your premium would be higher still if the answer was yes. But the no claims discount is over and above that, and it can usually only be applied to one vehicle.

I do have that on my side, no claims or convictions... Thing is it could be assumed by the insurer I haven't driven in all that time couldn't it?

No, there are other questions like:-

    Do you own another car
    How many cars in household
Do you have access to another car
