I thought John Lewis was a responsible company!

How do I get John Lewis to recognise their obligation and honour the deal they offered online?
I recently bought a Dyson vaccum with the following as part of the deal:-
“Save 20% when you trade in your old
vacuum cleaner
£199.99”
There were no conditions or reservations on the offer page. But JL rpeatedly say that I should have entered a code at checkout to get the 20% deal!
Where was I supposed to get find this code (which, remember, I had no reason to be looking for) you may ask?
It was under a tab called 'Special offers' which I needed to click on and open that section to view it!
I was not looking for any special offers, I just wanted what was offered.
How can I get them to honour the deal?
Thanks
Nigel

by following their terms and conditions - if you overlooked these and you still have time return the dyson for a refund and buy it again now you know what to look forJohn0

I just looked at the offer and I have to say it was completely obvious to me that you had to click to see the terms of the offer. Without clicking through you have no way of even knowing if there are any restrictions to the offer i.e. it has to be a fully working trade in or only certain brands accepted, or only and upright can be traded for an upright.
How long ago did you purchase? Could you return it under DSR and and buy it again applying the offer correctly this time?0 -

The offer is shown on the product page and the text is a link - which links to the code. I think it is fairly obvious that you need to click the link for more info on the offer. And by the way the link only shows you to a section on the same page - so you didn't need to find the code on a separate offers page. If you had just read the product description you would have found the code.
When you didn't get 20% off whilst going through the checkout why did you not think hang on where's my 20% off?0 -
Blimey! not one reply in my favour!
But hang on why do I need to go looking for conditions and limitations to the deal? Why is it bound upon me to look high and low for the downsides to a deal. Isn't it their responsibility to present the necessary info clearly to me?
To answer all my critics!
The deal is clear and there is nothing that says "but read the 'special offers' tab to find out about it". Why should I even look at 'special offers' when I did not want any, such as extra insurance, more accessories, get a JL credit card etc.
The page does NOT show anything about a code word to use at checkout. It does if you click the 'special offers' tab.
I did not expect anything about the trade in to show at checkout, because obviously the trade-in hadn't been done. I assumed the trade-in docs would be with the delivery. I would then take the old one to a JL store and get 20% back.
Interestingly the deal price has increased in the few days since I ordered it and by the amount of the 20% discount!

To ensure that you fulfill any conditions that might be in place. But hang on why do I need to go looking for conditions and limitations to the deal?
Have you not noticed that a lot, dare I say most, of this type of promotion come with 'limitations'?
It is not 'bound upon you', but as mentioned above it is often useful to understand what hoops you need to jump through to get the best advantage from these deals. Why is it bound upon me to look high and low for the downsides to a deal.
No.Isn't it their responsibility to present the necessary info clearly to me?
So you made not just one assumption, but two, instead of searching out all the conditions, rules or limitations.I assumed the trade-in docs would be with the delivery. I would then take the old one to a JL store and get 20% back.
Bad luck.0 -

The problem with that it that you ASSUMED that the paperwork would come with the order, you chose to not read the offer in full to find out before buying.
The offer is sold as 20% off when trading in which implies the money is deducted at checkout. What you thought would happen would actually be 20% cash back as you thought you had to pay in full and then claim the difference back. The offer isn't advertised as cash back in any way.
Typical that they have put the prices up but I believe the Dyson 20% trade-in is running at a number if retailers so still worth looking into returning under DSR and buying elsewhere if prices haven't changed.0 -
I think John Lewis have been pretty clear with the offer. Sometimes retailers are bit sneaky and hide things away. But I think on this occasion John Lewis have been very clear - you can't expect to put all the T&Cs on the product page as it would take up far too much room. But they have provided a link to them which I think is fair, if they were trying to be deceptive there wouldn't have been a link at all.0

you know what they say about assumption....0

Dyson - go to the local tip and see how many they have for sale; then find out what commerical cleaners use and buy a HenryDo you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0

Every one of the trade in type of deals I have ever seen, regardless of the company running it, has always had terms and conditions you need to meet to qualify for the deal and this one is no different.0
