Microphone problem on Vista.HELP

Well, im not sure if this covers your problem too - but some of the older soundcards had drivers which didn't include 'microphone 20db boost' in the drivers for Vista. Even Microsofts version of the driver didn't have it and the problem existed on popular soundcards like SB Live! and SB 24 bit Live.

The best thing you can do, is find the latest drivers for your motherboard. If this IS related to mic boost and your latest drivers dont have the function then you may be out of luck.

Just to clarify where the boost option should be...

Right click the speaker icon in the system tray
Select 'Recording Devices'
Select the microphone
Click Properties
Select the 'Custom' tab
You should see the check box for microphone boost.

Yeah, do a search on google for something like "no mic boost option" or similar. There are lots of posts about it for creative cards and some chipsets.

I think that manufacturers assumed Microsoft would support their older chipsets - but didn't consider they may not support ALL the functions attached to it.

I installed Vista for a friend in Holland recently, and he had the same issue with his 24-bit creative card. No mic boost and really low microphone volume.

You may want to consider getting a USB headset for now, which I don't think uses your soundcard (that could be wrong, so check first!)

How can i find out if my new vista laptop has an integral microphone. Have done a search and can't seem to find anything. I'm not sure where to look.
