Microphone problem on Vista.HELP

Hi, new to this forum. I have a new computer with vista, and cannot get mic to work. headfones are fine, mic is really faint, not completely dead in other words, but useless.i have tried everything i (and my so called techie mates) can think of, turned up all the volumes, deleted driver and resinstalled, but nothing works.
This headset and the other one i have tried work perfectly on my old machine with xp.. i do believe there's a problem with sound and vista, from what i've already read on the windows site, but would appreciate any help as i do use msn and skype a lot to keep in touch and i am tearing my hair out. many thanks for any tips..

Is it plugged in the mic socket (usually red coded) , if it's plugged in the "Line-In" it would give a very faint output.

thanks for your reply. yes it's plugged in correctly. i've tried it at back and front.. the plugs are red and black, the jacks are pink and green same as my last headset.. but i've checked it out ..

i feel like it's something really obvious that's why i dont want to pack it all up again and trudge off to some guy at pc world or wherever to sort it for me.. usually i'm alright at this kind of thing..

yes. i've done that. and i've uninstalled sound drivers and reinstalled them to no avail...
my partner can hear me on the other side (both msn and skype) but only very faintly and only if i shout..

i've tried to do sound recorder and same thing. i can hear myself very faintly if i turn win media up full volume.

well it could be the audio connections to the mobo have become loose or dislodged, easily checked by opening the case.

    it's onboard sound card,
just wondring could it be my security software? blocking something. i have one that came with the computer but i had to say yes or no to downloading it after i finally managed to get online
    ..

other than that i'm running out of ideas.

i dont know where i'd check to see if there's a loose connection.. i have the pc open ..
    everything seems to be ok

by the way thanks for all your help guys..

I very much doubt it would be security related.

The symptoms you describe would suggest perhaps the microphone boost isn't activated?
