Lufthansa claim rejected

Hi everyone,
Looking for a bit of advice!
My partner and I were due to fly to Larnaca via Frankfurt (only because this was the only option available through the airline) with Lufthansa in September last year. The day before we were due to fly I received an email to say our flight had been cancelled due to a strike (I think). We were then put on a different flight which went via Frankfurt AND Athens before finally arriving in Larnaca 5 hours later than our original flight were due to arrive.
Anyway, I used the template on this website and wrote to Lufthansa and have just had an email rejecting my claim.
Would anyone know if its worth emailing again?
From what I’ve read on this site, we should have been offered either a refund or put on a different flight but we weren’t offered a refund. It also states that even if you do get a refund you could still be entitled to compensation
Would it be worth trying it from this angle instead?
They have offered to refund any food costs etc but I didn’t keep my receipts for any food or drink bought at the airport.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
