Whoops, posted too soon - I meant to add that the best place I've come across (for all kinds of seed!) is MoreVeg. They have a fantastic range & are really cheap.

my perennial herbs such as sage, thyme, rosemary, oregano, mint etc. were all bought cheaply for about a £1 each years ago from a small independant garden centre/nursery. these will probably be about £1.50 now (some of the larger garden centres will prob. have them on 3 for £5 or something like that) and it's actually a lot easier to buy these as plants as you'll get instant results this later in the season when the weather warms up again. whereas if you're growing from seed, it's actually longer to wait before you're able to make you're first cutting (plus, the germination rate probably wouldn't that great).

the annual herbs such as basil, coriander and parsley are cheaper from seed, and with these you'll need to make regular sowings of these if you want a supply throughout the growing period.

I got the 3 for £5 like Pawsies from B&M. They're quite big plants, really healthy. Mine are doing well but still in the greenhouse before I plant them out when the weather gets a bit warmer. I got Sage, Thyme & Rosemary, there were others, but I can't recall what they were.

I was surprised to see that the herbs and plants in Homebase were at least as good as the local garden centres, but cheaper. I guess they have buying power.

Only issue is DIY/ sheds will have foriegn plants - your local garden centre will likey have British Grown Plants. (or this early in the season larger plants will possibly be from Italy) It pays to ask and support british growers wherever possible :T

Thanks dogstarheaven, they haven't even arrived yet; but will take this into account when they come and keep my eyes peeled in the meantime for fresh ones.

I don't bother growing parsley from seed any more. The seed is slow to germinate and you have to wait a while for the crop. I just buy two of the small pots that supermarkets sell for about 75p, one curly leafed and one flat leafed. I then split each into 5 plants, and plant outside direct into the herb bed. They grow on to form big clumps very quickly. There is no reason why you couldn't do the same in pots.

I've just managed to spot fresh pots of basil and mint on Mr T, so will try these as a starting point as i am not very greenfingered. At least if the seeds have a good date on them, i can maybe keep them til next year .

Cheers all, i have just checked the Bag £1 bargains down the left hand side, and discovered Park Promotions seeds deal for £1.99, which offers eleven herbs and four vegetables i think. So going to have a pop at those!
    .

I have used park promotions a few times over the years and they are pretty good and deliver quickly. I had one issue where they hadn't sent one pack of seeds, but a duplicate of another-think I had 2 lots of globe artichokes and no celery I emailled them and got a reply very swiftly to say sorry, please keep the extra chokes and my celery seeds would be resent. 2 days later got 2 packs of celery and a few radom packs of seed to "apologise" as per the nice note they sent with it.

Will pop off to look at this years offer :)
