for my elderly mother to use on giffgaff (so unlocked/O2 locked) and clearly we don't want a top if we can avoid it as we wouldn't use it.

What is the priority - cheap or simple?
The cheapest phones are about £5+£10 at CPW (PAYG, but not locked).
For the simplest phones for eldery people see Doro, but they are not that cheap: Mobile for elderly person0 -
How about latest Nokia 105?
Should cost around £13 (plust VAT possibly), last a week on a single charge and be available in few days.
Last year bought Nokia 2220 and she's very happy. Her first phone ever she knows how to set up (date/time, profile etc)0 -
