Colleen,
Really sorry about your Hammy. We have been in your position too many times with our cats so I know what you are going through.
RIP Little Hammyx0 -
Thanks for all your replies. I always loved rodents they have a place in my heart!
Apart from a mouse I had about 10 years ago he is probably the one that lived the longest. I put that down to him living in the equivelent of a hamster palace, and he was partial to a poppadom whenever we had an indian takeaway;) We adopted him from a rescue centre when someone left him outside in a box  along with his siblings (all who have since passed away)
He has finally crossed Rainbow Bridge, and is hopefully running full pelt on his wheel with the rest of his family.
Cheers to Hammie who lived a long and happy life:beer:
RIP LITTLE ONE.....Going to stop typing, the keyboard is getting wet

There is no tariff on the love we should feel for our animals, they are our family. You sound like a very caring hamster mum, Hammie couldn't have asked for more. Love the fact he loved poppadoms0

I had a hamster called Hami he was my first proper pet I loved him to bits and broke my heart for weeks after he passed away

I'm so sorry for you loss. Hugs

Don't ever feel silly for feeling the pain of losing a beloved animal.I am sure the vets would rather have people weeping all day long because they loved their animal than having to put down an abused and suffering one because it can't be saved.
I cried for weeks after losing my chipmunk at nearly 10 years old. They are only meant to live for 5 or so.No matter how small they all have their funny ways and are capable of giving the love back that is shown to them.
Will you get another?0 -
One of my biggest regrets in life is not taking our hamster to be put down when he developed tumors in his cheeks. We took him to the vet, who prescribed some medicam and eyedrops (His eyes were crusting over). We so desperately didn't want to lose him that we lost sight of what was best for him, and it still makes me well up now thinking that he could have been in pain (Hopefully he wasn't. He slept all the time, and I think the medicam knocked him for six).
He will be ever so much happier and trust me you will feel so much better having him put to sleep rather than thinking he possibly might be suffering.
Hope yours and mine will share poppadom in the sky

Not silly at all just shows your a loving person and that Hammie was a wonderful pet.
I was so upset when my guinea pig died and then lost my rabbit few months later as they where hutchmates and rabbit got depressed and wouldn't eat. So sad animals can't live as long as humans as they such wonderful companions.

Sorry for your loss. That is a good age for a hamster, you obviously took great care of him. I had to have our rat put to sleep after he developed a tumour and had trouble walking so I understand how hard it is. No matter how small the animal they occupy a big place in your heart. I am sure the people at the vets do not think you are an idiot, they will see upset people a lot and know you are grieving. I am sure they are animal lovers themselves so they understand.0
