Taking my hammie to be put to sleep at 11 :(

My 3.5 yr old robo is being put to sleep today. I know most people will be like oh its only a hamster but i am teary already :( i have to go on my own as husband is at work. Hopefully he will go straight to hamster heaven but i feel so guilty. He has trouble walking without falling over now and he has numerous tumors. RIP little one :'(

RainbowBridge.comJust this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....!

I hope that today you will remember the good times that you have had with Hammy and know that you are doing the right thing. All the Best Ljonski.

I had to do this with 3 of my 4 hamsters so I know how you are feeling - these little furballs are in no way "just a hamster" they each have their own individual personalities and become just as much a part of the family as any pet.

It is not nice to have to go through but it is the right decision for little hammy - I have stayed and held mine and although really upsetting I felt happier knowing that they knew me and fell to sleep in my arm/hands.

    RIP little hammy

Oh hun you don't need to get a grip at all, its perfectly natural. I broke my heart when I lost a Gerbil.
Don't ever feel silly for grieving.

    RIP little hammy.

Poor thing - it doesn't matter what sort of animal it is, if you love it it always hurts :( You're doing the right thing for hammy.
  • Hammie has departed. It was horrific. I was trying not to cry but i burst into tears in front of vet, receptionist and others. They must have thought i was an idiot. I sobbed all the way home. At least he is no longer in pain. My bank card also got declined as i was paying aswell but the lady om reception told me to pop in with the money another day. I dont drink, but feel like i need one today. :(

They don't think you're an idiot. They probably see it everyday and most of them have probably been through it themselves.
It doesn't matter whether it's a cat, dog, hamster or any animal, it all hurts the same.

So sorry about this; the size of the pet doesn't matter, you still love them. So don't feel silly.

You must have given him a very good life for him to now pass away at 3.5 years - that's very old for a hamster.

I agree any animal loss is hard and the vets will not think you an idiot, more likely a very caring and loving pet owner. I had to take my neighbours hamster to be put down when they were on holiday, it suffered a stroke and I cried in the vets and all the way home as I felt so bad and in some way responsible even though I was assured i couldn't have prevented it. In time you will feel better and remember the happy times with Hammie, he was lucky to have had such a lovely life with you
