hello
looking for anyone to confirm that this is the going rate for the removal company. the salesman came round and checked out our belongings etc and said we had a nearly full lorry load. we are packing ourselves and they will provide the boxes. we are just moving about 2 miles down the road. the quote was for £730 ish......This is a welll established company but it just seems a lot??????
Is this about right? I have a quote from a one man band but a few reservations about that...£550ish
Anyone got any reassurance that this is the going rate.
thanks anyone!

Unofrtunately it probably is about right. We were quoted over £900 + VAT to move 50 miles - we were doing all the packing ourselves, same as you.
We've now decided to rent a van for a couple of days and do it ourselves. Van hire will be around £150 for two days, plus beer for the family and friends that will be helping us to load and unload at each end. Far cheaper, although no one to blame for any breakages apart from ourselves!
Also, if you decide to do it yourselves, we've found banana boxes are the best to use for packing. Almost impossible to overfill them as they have handles at either end and so easy to lift. Ask your local supermarket to save them for you - we've just collected 20 from Asda but could probably do with another 50.
Good luckBCSC # 9 and proud! :beer:0 -
We had quotes from a couple of Larger "more professional" firms and that was to move a 3 bed semi into a 2 bed bungalow about 1 mile away. Ours worked out at about £800. We have gone with the one man band man who is charging us £270 (should be £350 but because of where I work he has given us an additional discount - lovely man).
If stuck for packing boxes try freecycle!0 -
do be sure about insurance when using one man bands - if his lorry is stolen en route (and it happens ) will you be able to replace all your belongings on his insurance ?0

thanks very much everyone, looks like thats the going rate then!
I'm in the wrong business!
Good luck everyone with your moves!0 -
Yes banana boxes are really strong. Morrisons were very good and let me have a lot. I just asked him to make sure there were no hairy monster spiders lurking in the bottom! They seemed glad to get rid of them.0

do be sure about insurance when using one man bands
We used a well-known national firm a few years back and found, when we needed to claim for damage, that they had no insurance as such; they just sent their own man to assess (= disagree!) and offered what they thought they could get away with.
We only found out afterwards that we could have kept our household contents policy going and been fully covered by that. It would usually be your cheapest bet as long as you tell them in advance.0 -
We are moving from a 3 bed semi 50 miles and had 4 quotes, £575, £600, £650 and £700. We are going with the £600 which is a bar member and includes boxes. I would get some more quotes. Maybe it depends on the area of the country you are in.0

If it is only 2 miles away I would hire a van and make a few trips.
It might take a couple of hours more but you will save loads of money.0 -
I think its about average but when I moved (I have 3 kids, and an office to transport) I had a local firm do it for £230 - I'm in Lancashire. They have moved us twice now in four years and both times have been excellent. My best friend has just used them too. Unfortunately all other removal firms were £500+ which I thought was too much as I was only moving 3 miles.I am a Mortgage Adviser

I have hired transits with a tail lift for the last 3 moves, very handy for avoiding back pain, and getting heavier items off and on the van. Mine was £69 a day, also entertaining to drive, after a modern car lol0
