Re-connecting an old line

I will be moving into a house that has been empty for a few months, there is a phone line to the house which I assume will have been disconnected when the previous owners moved out, will I have to pay a fee to get the line reconnected and who do I contact to do this will it have to be BT or can any home phone provider do this?

The fee depends on what the provider you choose charges.

Not all providers will reconnect ceased lines, but many do.

It's normally the same charge as for a new line (BT start at £130, others down to about £40). And, no, it doesn't have to be BT, although it's BT OR who do the physical work required.

If there is a dialtone BT will reconnect it for free (subject to T's and C's)

In my experience, providers make their charges for this up as they go along.

I also asked Sky to start an old line a while back, which after 6 weeks they finally decided they were unable to do.

BT will probably be less hassle, and I had an old line restarted by them for nothing when I agreed to an 18 month contract.

A few company will charge you for doing it if you just take out a talk package, but if you take phone and broadband with them, they'll often waive the fee
