The "wife" in housewife means woman, not married lady.

It is like "midwife" - someone who assists the woman in labour.

Similar to "hausfrau" in German - literally "house-woman".

    Yet the Oxford Dictionary says

    Definition of housewife
    noun (plural housewives)
    • 1a married woman whose main occupation is caring for her family, managing household affairs, and doing housework: the traditional division of labour between the husband as breadwinner and wife as housewife

That's exactly my point. The "wife" refers to the woman giving birth, not to the sex of the assistant.

But in the case of housewife it means what it says that they are a wife i.e married or have a partner who supplies an income

  • Don't think housewife works if you have no other source of income.
