Contents insurance, what is my occupation?

Just sorting my contents insurance, I rent so don't need buildings insurance. I'm not working and claiming income support and I'm not required to look for work as I have a newborn baby so as my occupation can I put 'housewife/person' or would I have to put 'unemployed' even though I'm not looking for work at the moment?

I've never taken insurance out before and don't want to mess it up should I need to claim! Thanks for any advice.

Depends on their wording. With my insurance over the phone it was are you in receipt of any state benefits.

'Housewife' is a lower risk occupation than 'unemployed'.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...

Some companies won't accept housewife unless you have a partner that works

  • If you are claiming JSA you need to put down unemployed.

One I use to deal with when I work as a broker. How can you be a housewife or husband if you are on your own the clue is the word

Yes it's just me and the kids, but I consider myself a full time mum/homemaker/housewife - not unemployed

Heard it a million times. Could never be 4rsed to argue the point to be honest.
  • If you don't work you are one of:
    • unemployed
    • independent means
    • retired
    • housewife/househusband
If you're not loaded, you don't have a spouse who works, and you don't receive a pension, you count as unemployed unless you have some special circumstances applying

don't put this down unless you are properly registered with ofsted etc as one; also childminders who look after kids at their own home get special terms and conditions on their insurance making it a doubly bad idea

The "wife" in housewife means woman, not married lady.

It is like "midwife" - someone who assists the woman in labour.

Similar to "hausfrau" in German - literally "house-woman".
