Free wifi access, but how?

It seems that pubs and restaurants all display, "free wifi access" these days, but never having used this facility before, how do you go about it? With a tablet due soon, no doubt I will want to put it to the test but have no idea how it is done.

Generally what happens is that you activate wifi on your tablet, log onto the internet, and a box comes up and asks for the password which you get from the barman, or proprietor. Sometimes you put yr mobile phone number into the box and you get an access code by text.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

Sometimes you have to provide an e-mail address to register with the provider of the WiFi
If you are a BT customer, you can use BTFON wireless hotspots0 -

get yourself a free email address - perhaps gmail.com etc

Never been asked for my email address when using free wifi yet.
One thing I have noticed though is just how many hotspots will not work with either Windows 7 or an iPad.Never Knowingly Understood.

WiFi broadcast from businesses own Internet connection
BT Openzone
BT FON
The Cloud

You've never travelled on the East Coast Main Line, and used their WiFi, then.Other companies have heir own systems (Eastcoast trains, Virgin trains, Tesco etc) which require different degrees of signup to use.0
