EU Bank transfer

Hi, not sure if you can help but, I did a bank transfer to Italy on the 20th for 165 euro plus £8 fee for a deposit on an holiday apartment, my bank (Smile) said it would be there on Friday 22nd, but today I get an e-mail from the person I sent it too that it still hasn't arrived in their bank account. I phoned my bank and they said to investigate it would cost me £20. I said I will wait one more day. How long does it normally take for a bank transfer to Italy/EU? If I pay another £20 pounds will I get my transfer back? Also I noticed on my online banking they spelled the surname name of the recipient wrong (Moglione not Maglione), would that made a difference?

£20 for what?! - unless they prove that you gave them wrong payee details.
You paid them the fee, they promised you 22nd - and failed to meet their promise.
Even old-fashioned SWIFT transfers typically take 1 working day: http://www.nationwide.co.uk/search/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=1768
Modern SEPA transfers have to be even faster.
I am no expert, but I think misspelled name wouldn't make any difference if all other details are correct.
Take a screenshot showing the transaction and e-mail it to the landlord to gain some time.0 -
From the smile website:
- to accounts in some European countries using euro CHAPS it'll be completed on the same day. Payments can be made between 8:30am and 2:30pm (see account tariff). To make a euro CHAPS payment, send us a secure message. Click here to see what information we need you to send
- to accounts in the USA and some European countries using TIPANET, it'll take 5 - 7 working days
- to all countries using SWIFT, if urgent, it'll take 3 - 5 working days, non-urgent 5 - 7 working days
- to all countries within the European Union using structured payment, it'll be made on the same working day

I guess it's gone by Tipanet or Swift, perhaps non-urgent?43580 -
Italy being part of the Euro - the payment should have arrived at the destination bank by the end of the next business day at the latest as long as the BIC and IBAN were correct and the payment came out of a personal account.
A business account would be debited differently and use the old style system whereby payments would take 3-5 working days.0 -
Thanks for the replies, I checked the receipt I got in the post today and the IBAN number is correct and the BIC/SWIFT is correct. What should I do? £20 for Smile foreign service to query it seems like a kick to the stomach0

As I said, e-mail a copy (photo) of the receipt and/or a screenshot to Italy with some explanations and wait for a few days.
Then, if the money doesn't show, pay £20 'under protest' and raise a complaint demanding it back. However, unless you know the other party closely, there always is a possibility that they are telling lies that they haven't received the money.0 -
I tried to find an e-mail for the bank in Italy (che banca) but could not find a written address and the form e-mail on their site doesn't seem to work.
The renter has good reviews but it is indeed possible they are lying, nothing surprises me any more. If they are trying one on, do I have any course of action?
I will take your advice and pay the £20 under protest on Wednesday. Thanks your time and help.0 -
I don't think grumbler is suggesting you send an email to the Italian bank, but to the renter so that he knows you have sent the money and to buy you some time to allow it to arrive. I wouldn't pay Smile anything for at least a couple more days.0

As said above, I meant sending to the renter, not to the bank.
I though I made it very clear: "e-mail it to the landlord to gain some time".0 -
An update - my bank's foreign service got me my money back but minus £32.99 in fees  they said the recipient's account number was incorrect. I checked with the recipient and they said their account number is correct!
Is there any way I can get some of these fees back?0
