Kitchen Glass Splashbacks

Hi, during the next couple of weeks im having a black gloss kitchen fitted. I like the look of glass splashbacks along the wall 3.5m in between the base units and wall units, behind range cooker and behind the sink etc.

Has anyone had this done?. any money saving way to do this which looks the biz??

Any companies that come reccomeneded?..

Ive seen some excellent glass wall tiles at porcelenosa but there coming in at £55m2.

Any advice please or tips??

Anybody in Leicester area?

Regards

Mohammad

IKEA have them, but we didn't buy, 'cos weren't sure about introducing another shade of white, into the kitchen, to cover such a large, flat area. Also concerns on cutting/adjusting for fitment.

We had IKEA gloss black units, with Homebase Quartz colour worktops, choosing the Homebase (cheap) white glass mosaic as splashbacks & it looked great. The oven & hob were white glass, too - Electrolux - American style Samsung fridge & gloss white, with some black floor tiles, we had a super monochrome kitchen.

At our new place we chose gloss red units,(IKEA discontinued black for some reason) but oven & hob & splashbacks, we did the same.

  • We put a glass splashback in about 5 months ago, they look great. We got ours cut to size from a local glaziers. You need to tell them its for a splashback so they use heat resistant glass, cost us about £20 with all the fittings/brackets included.

Just in case anyone else is thinking of a glass splashbak, I found a place on eBay that will put any picture you want onto a splashback. I was really pleased with mine.

    hi everyone,

i will be posting some pictures on monday becasue hopefully it will all be complete by then.....but i have complete glass all around my kitchen walls (its a U shaped kitchen). basically we wanted glass splashbacks in that greeny white aqua colour that you can buy from glass splashback manufacturers for ridiculous money.

i achieved this by measuring all shapes and sizes under my cupboards, behind cooker and under extractor, windowsill and back wall all with socket holes and drawing them up on CAD.

i used this website as a guide which helped alot; http://www.mykitchenstore.co.uk/myksblog/?p=89

i then had them cut at work (i work for a yacht glazing company) and some edges polished where you will see the finihsed edges. i chose standard 6mm toughend float glass (this is the standard glass that most manufacturers stock) as this gives the aqua greeny white colour when painted with white paint, and 15mm polished glass for the window sill. i then painted the panels with 3 coats of ronseal brilliant white tile paint on the back edge of each of the 9 glass panels (this gives a smooth glossy glass finish with the colur seen thru the glass).

please note, when fitting the glass you need the correct "neutral" silicone sealant and mirror adhesive. if you use standard, there is a very good chance that the acid that is released will damage the paint permanently, and you will have to scratch it all off the back again and repaint! i then positioned each glass panel in place using 2mm tile spacers (once the sockets were removed and the power off), pumped loads of mirror adhesive (evostick from B & Q) on the back and stuck it on the wall. this is very sticky stuff but takes 24 hours to go off so you have some time to make adjustments in the glass positions.

a good tip i discovered when trying to postion everything (there were some pretty big gaps!) was the use of a plunger on the glass. you have no way otherwise of pulling the glass away from the walls or moving them if you have a large bit of glass or not much room.

once all 9 pices were in place (2mm gap between each panel) i left them to cure for 24 hours. once this was complete i could then seal all the edges with neautral clear silicone to make sure that no water, dust, dirt or grease can enter thru any edges. i then trimed the excess silicone off and recut and fitted the cornice under the cupboards to hide any imperfect edges and to finsih the kitchen. the final bit of this will be getting done this weekend so im hopeing to get some pics up for you on monday! all in it cost me £100. please bear in mind that it will cost anyone else a fair bit more for the glass ( i got it at cost price) plus £12 for the paint, and £15 for the sealants.

i think it looks great and was far easier than i thought to fit. if you have any questions then please ask, although i hope to write a how to guide on monday with pictures! as a quick note, a collegue of mine was going to have 2 pieces fitted by a local colured glazing specialist company in norwich called contract glass (or "glass act" http://www.contractglass.co.uk/). they are very proffesional and great quality but i think expensive. he wanted a 3m length and a 2m length with socket holes, painted in a "ice blue" colour that is identical to the greeny aqua colour achieved by the tile paint and float glass. they wanted to charge hhim £1600 for these two!!!!!! madness.

as a further note, if anyone wants rich coloured glass (E.g. red, pink etc) then you will need to buy "opticlear" or "ultraclear" glass that has a different mineral content. this doesnt have anywhere near as much of the greenish hue that standard glass has and is typically 20 - 40% more expensive, but any colour can be chosen depending on what tile paint you can have mixed!

    hope this helps someone! cheers

The company on ebay was shepwayglass. Google them!

That's right although the last time I looked, they were no longer doing the picture image splashbacks. Has this changed?

They also never left me any feedback although I left them fabulous feedback!

Still really pleased with the item though and cheap enough to change when I get bored with the picture.
