My eldest daughter is going to America with the guides for two weeks and we'd like her to have as much availability from her phone that our money will allow. Hopefully we can send/receive texts/calls and she can web if possible.

Any idea what the cheapest way around this is please? She's with Tesco Mobile who give web at £8 per mb.

No UK providers 'give' web abroad for £8, especially in USA. Data roaming in America is pretty expensive and the best is to buy a local sim for this. The phone has to be not locked to a network for working with a local sim.

As it's a smartphone it's most likely to work in USA, but still worth making sure:

    It's £8/Mb, not 'web'.

A common UK monthly allowance is 500Mb and will cost £4K at this price.

My apologies then :o. I hope you do realise how small 1Mb is. With £8/Mb people face 4 digit bills when coming back.
However, as I said, I think all UK providers will charge about the same for data roaming in USA.

Orange charge £6/day for 30Mb/day bundle and £20-£175 for monthly bundles 30Mb-500Mb, but you have to be a pay monthly customer.

Yep, that's why I was trying to get a reasonable deal. Don't mind paying say £100 but sounds like even that is too little.

As regards texting each other you could both download whatsapp and it would be free to send and receive.
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

Unless you get a local sim with data I'd say use the many free wifi locations in the US. Data is extortionate and I' not risk it myself, let alone a youngster keeping track of their usage.

Do a search for free wifi where she's going and it might provide the answer, including using Skype for voice calls.
