Propane bottles?

Can someone please tell me if I can buy a empty bottle off gumtree and take it to be refilled, to avoid a bottle rental charge,
or do I need a written rental agreement with the supplier first?
Do they check if the bottle is stolen?
The rental is ridiculously expensive.

Don't see why you can't do that other than the fact that whoever is selling the gas bottle should not be selling it !!
It belongs to the gas company & should be classed as stolen property.
But I don't suppose anybody is really bothered.
I have never ever been asked to show the bottle rental agreement.

It's not unusual to own your own propane cylinder. I'd be inclined to buy it. Don't take my word for it though, I bet there'll be a caravanner or someone who's got more recent experience who can offer a more up-to-date view.

You don't own the bottle you hire it. The deposit depreciates over a a number of years to zero, so even if it was handed back with the rental agreement there maybe no refund due anyway. Without the rental agreement there is defiantly no refund. Calor do occasionally donate a small sum to charity if the bottle is returned though.

So go ahead and buy if it is cheap.

You don't need the rental agreement.

They don't check to see if it stolen.

Calor bottle user for over thirty years.
