pies! you can hide anything i them. i make a big batch of shortcrust pastry (flour, butter, water) and freeze it in portions. doesn't take long to defrost either. Have started stretching out my chicken too. up to 3 meals from one chook. roast breast, chicken pie with legs/thighs, chicken and vege soup cooked with bones for flavour. (Take bones out before serving!) i'm desperately trying to reduce grocery bill. From £50/week, after all there's only the 2 of us! but we're both very active and sooo hungry!!!0

This is an old one, that my grandma used to make for her many grandchildren:
1 packet soup/broth mix (basically mixed lentils, barley, & split peas) -(50p)
2 stock cubes - (10p)
1 onion (10p)
2 sticks celery (5p)
3 carrots (10p)
Water
As much/little minced beef as you like (50p - £2.00) (or soya)
Salt & pepper.
Boil everything up together for about 40 mins, until all the pulses are soft.
Maybe add a few extra spices/15p tinned tomatoes/worcestershire sauce to taste?
Serves at least 4.
So it can cost between 35p and 70p per meal.
So go mad and add a little grated cheese on top!
It's a nice meal on a winter's night with crusty bread, and you can re-heat it (store in the fridge though)0 -
I've recently found a shop that sells all sorts of spices and bits and pieces - lots of the local restaurants get their supplies from there.
We bought a 20kg sack of basmati rice (the really nice stuff) for £15. We like good sized portions so 2/3 of a mug of uncooked rice is all we need for the two of us. I prefer rice to potatoes and pasta and the bag will last us at least six months!
My pasta sauces are basically a tin of chopped tomatoes for 15p, an onion 10p and garlic and ginger (I bought a large tub of fresh garlic and ginger in a paste for £3.75 from the same shop) - the two teaspoons I used can't have cost more than 10p, and some oregano - 5p max. Fry the onion for 5 mins, add the garlic and ginger and the oregano. If you like, you can add left over peppers/mushrooms/kidney beans - the list is endless. Sometimes I pop in a tin of tuna. It's a tasty meal and costs pennies per portion.
Tortilla is good to make - you can use your left over veg. Chuck it all in a frying pan and heat through. Then add an omelette mixture (eggs and milk) and cook slowly. Finish off under a grill or in the oven (if you pan is oven proof). Serve with salad or garlic bread.
My favourite cheap lunch is a tin of beans on toast!0 -
tonight Im doing a pie, potatoes & veg
hALF a pack of puff pastry from farmfoods 30p
onion -5p
handful of on-way-out value mushrooms 10p
gravy made with comptons/flour/2 stock cubes 10p
1/3 pack turkey chunks from tescos 1.00
4 potatoes - value bag 20p
value carrots ( loads) 20p
DONE- 1.95
Not the cheapest, but not bad either. As long as we eat our main meal under 1.00 a portion,im happy with that:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Here's our favourite cheapy dessert. I cube and freeze stale bread and then make a bread pudding.
Boil about 4oz dried fruit in a little fruit squash or juice for 2-3mins
Pour over cubed bread in a piedish. Add chopped (stale) eating apple or pear.
Add quarter pint milk.
Top with demerara sugar and bake at Gas 6 for 15 mins till top of bread is crispy and brown and liquid absorbed.
This is good for husband's low cholesterol diet if skimmed milk and wholemeal bread are used!!!0 -

I don't usually economise on food, but rarely spend more than £100 per week for 4, including lots of fruit and veg.
