If you substitute all or some of your meat free mince with red lentils (cooked in stock), you get an even cheaper and healthier and more filling meal!0 -
I definitely need to join in with this! I'm rubbish at planning meals and was overjoyed when M&S opened a few months ago so I could buy healthy meals and not have to think about it! It did cost me less for a while as I wasn't traipsing around Tesco for hours picking up random things then having to go shopping every night after work as I didn't have anything to make a meal with! I must get more disciplined and now have lots of great recipes - thank-you! Our monthly food and housekeeping budget is £200 for the two of us, which isn't too bad but I think it could probably be less.:jToday is the first day of the rest of your life; live it as if it were your last. :beer:0

Welcome to the thread to anyone new! I had no idea this was on Martin's newsletter until this morning (haven't had a chance to read his latest thoughts, I usually read it religiously on Wednesdays)
Thanks Juliapenguin for your thoughts re the court case - it was nice to draw a line under it at last and show the evil landlady she could not get away with doing such things, a moral victory for us.
Now I can focus on 'normal' things like shopping, socialising, money saving etc! A refreshing feeling.
One of the cheapest meals is poached egg, potatoes and salad - we get 6 eggs for £0.49p at the market, so I am guessing total cost for the meal is around £0.80 each.MFW #185

Hey,
We normally spend £180/month ... so thats £45/week ... mind u that includes all cleaning products, shampoo/deo/toothpaste etc, plus alcohol.
One tip - Tesco's own brand pasta - it's really nice and you can get a 3KG bag for £1!! If u don't want a huge cheap-looking bag of pasta cluttering up ur kitchen counter, empty it out into pretty glass storage jars and it looks v poshTarget debt - Loan left over from previous relationship - c. £3700

We (us pair) normally spend between £40-£50 weekly.
I do the spag bol and shepherds pie/ cottage pie thing too - I use condensed soups for my sauce mix though as I can get 3 or 4 for £1 from Farmfoods.
Also do a pasta and tuna dish - this means mixing everything up and adding salad and veg or whatever you fancy and then I mix mayo into mine.0 -
I do Chicken Tikka with pasta and mayo too - I find the mayo (which I know is supposed to be worse than butter for us  ) tones the tikka down. Again add potato, veg, salad, or whatever you fancy. You can buy the bags of Chicken Tikka from most places for about £2, I usually get about 3-4 meals (x2) this will depend on how much tikka you can stomach.0

Thank you so much for this thread! I have been sorting out our food this last week and have not been shopping at all!! Last night i used two chicken breasts and made a chicken pie and thai green curry. The two breasts made enough food for 2 days food for both of us. The meals must have cost about 60p each portion! Great, my other half is really impressed and enjoying all the frozen veg we are eating.Leopardlady

We make our own pesto and freeze it. The ingredients are home grown basil, (the new crop is about a cm high right now!) pine nuts, which are a bit dear, but a little goes a long way, garlic and olive oil. Just a tablespoon at a time will add a bit of lift to lots of things. It is also available all year round.0

Last night's cheap recipe was a sort-of-Thai curry - some turkey breast (got a pack reduced to £1.50 from which I've had three portions), fried with garlic, ginger, chilli, some green pepper (or whatever veg you've got), add some lemongrass (got a jar for about a pound which has lasted me a few weeks), sprinkle of coriander (powder) and a handful of chopped coriander leaves (homegrown). Rather than adding coconut milk - cos I didn't have any - I just stirred a spoonful of mayonnaise in for a bit of creaminess. Serve with noodles (cheap ones 8p a pack or thereabouts?), rice, or I had it with pasta.
Less than £1 a portion again I reckonDebt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0
