I'm severely allergic to cats too and avoid them, but I honestly can't recognise this world that some posters are painting a picture of where cats are leaving a trail of destruction behind them and wreaking havoc on people's ability to live their lives.

If your daughter is too young to know not to touch cat poo if she finds it, shouldn't you be out there with her anyway?

Cats have a huge positive impact on the lives of some isolated elderly people, the benefits to both physical and mental are well-proven.

The elderly tend to keep house cats, don't they? The ones I know do.

DD is almost 2.5. She's fine in the garden (the back of our house is glass so I can always see her) and she's very capable of being out there on her own. Why should that be hampered by somebody else's pet?

Maybe we should listen to a naturalist, environmentalist or biologist who works in the field or with the data directly - not give so much authority because someone stands in front of a camera and presents popular science articles.

You don't think that that is where the info comes from?

What a strange view of the world you have.

I didn't know cats did not like being sprayed?, must be a nightmare trying to bathe them. I guess this explains why the chubby cat who used to visit my garden regularly no longer does, after I started throwing ice cubes at it.:rotfl:

Cats, dogs? Makes no difference to me. Personally, I can't stand any pets, which are allowed to roam freely inside someone's home.

I kindly refuse to eat or drink anything at a home who own a cat or dog because:

    (a) their home stinks
    (b) hygiene goes out of the window when pets have infected the food preparation area and are being stroked every two minutes.

Further, I'm reluctant to shake the hand of a cat/dog owner, sit on their sofa or spend any length of time in their home. Thankfully, hardly any of my close friends or relatives own a cat or a dog.

Yes. You're not seriously comparing kids with animals?

Not comparing no but alot of what you said applies to kids as well- they make alot of mess, can be mucky and are germ factories- apart from flu pandemic's generally you can't transmit illness between animal and human whereas a toddler is going to give you what he has easily.

I am given to understand by my friends with kids that they get into everything (even places that they shouldn't) so judging by your own standards you shouldn't eat or drink in a household with kids either!

I have been calling the cat in when i am at home since this (which is a lot!) but can't leave the window open when I'm out because of the cold and because the house is then insecure against break ins (there isn't a small window) and as I'm a SAHM its not like I'm gone for hours on end!

There is a plastic greenhouse in the garden easily accessible to the cats with food and blankets in a dry cardboard box in it so its not like the cat has no shelter at all in the whole hour I'm out for, I'm not a heartless cow

One of the cats does poo in my garden. I clean it up. My back wall is almost all glass and I wouldn't dream of letting my 2.5 y/o play out there unsupervised, cat or no cat.

You cant control cats, the problem is hers, not yours

If she doesn't want the cat to get into her house, it should be her taking measures to stop it.

    Cat repellent wont help.

Other than that, buy her an Alsation, that'll keep the cat away.:D

Great advice, Cats cannot be controlled, I have a problem with my neighbours cat, uses my porch and flower bed right under my bedroom window, I like cats but not the horendous smell so have no option but to keep disinfecting my porch and keep my bedroom window closed, havent found a repellent that works, had a Staffie
that hated them but would never have let him loose on a cat.

Well, our garden has been landscaped to be safe for DD. She's not unsupervised, but she's perfectly capable of playing out there without me being 2ft away from her all the time.
