Virginmedia speed increase
I had Virginmedia broadband fibre of up to 30mb and using speedtest sites I was getting about 25-28
Logging into my virginmedia account there was a offer of 60mb for a extra fiver a month. So I signed up
Now you would think I should show a speed increase with the speedtest sites....NO...still get the same speed.
Virgin say I am on the 60mb package and that the speed is only "up to" 60mb.....but if I doubled my speed from 30 then surely I should show a increase ????...according to virgin NO.

Surprised at that, as Virgin generally provide very close to the advertised maximum speed on their cable service.
If your account shows you are on the 60Mb service, but speed tests (use a cable connection for that, rather than wireless) show you're only getting 30Mb, phone them up and say you're unhappy paying extra for nothing. Check the speed with more than one computer and at different times if you can.
They might agree to cancel the upgrade, or at least credit you for the extra you're paying. Say you'll switch to BT Infinity, or somebody reselling it, if they won't budge.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Speeds are never consistent. Lots of factors come into play - how you connect, WiFi? What your neighbours are doing etc etc. I am on te same service as you, and off pek I get around 55Mb, but at peak load t is around 24Mb.
Incidentally, they don't 'do' fibre - despite their misleading claims. You have a coaxial copper connection. neither does BT (unless you are a business and pay extra for beir FTTP service).0 -
Is there a option within the modem to check what speed it should be receiving....
I always use a wired connection
I'm in the middle of a contract with them, might give them a call again and see what happens.

I have my Superhub in modem mode so can't give the precise path to the config in router mode but you should be able to find it by visiting http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.100.1/ and looking around. You may need to go into advanced mode - default user admin and password changeme iirc
This is my operational config on 60...

You can get the max traffic rates by going to the Superhub login page and before logging in, click on the Router Status link at the top right of the page. The click on the Operation Configuration option to see the details shown in the previous post.

I have the Virgin 30Mb service and right now I'm getting 56Mb. Never seems to drop below 31Mb.''He who takes no offence at anyone either on account of their faults, or on account of his own suspicious thoughts, has knowledge of God and of things devine.''0

Hi, just wondering where are you around the country. I live around London area off peak ca get 20 to 30 mb but peak time it is really slow. Generally around 5 to 6 Mbps even connected to LAN, and sometimes only 0.5 Mbps.
Have call virgin media but they say they are fixing the problem but this has been going for months. My son brought it to my attention recently after they all come back home from uni trying to get online at night is not good. For 2 months running they have credited my account after checking it is a problem.0 -
VM are doubling speeds anyway - you should have gone from 30mb to 60mb for free, or be about to soon - http://doublespeed.virginmedia.com/?buspart=press_73
when they did my area I had to ring up and get the speed boost and now it's usually where it should be, around the 60mb mark. Keep on at them, you may need an engineer's visit.0
