hi, i have oil heated house for heating and water, the house is freezing all day its on for 3 hours morning and 2 hours evening get up in the morning and its cold all day when it comes back on in evening after an hour is quite hot so dont get why in morning it doesnt heat up the same. Im wanting to put it on constant as when i lived in my all electric flat it was alot cheaper to leave it on constantly than heat up from cold and flat was always warm and always had hot water. However oil is really expensive and i dont want to end up with no oil in a week time as i can only afford to buy £50 worth every 2 weeks since losing my job and just want it warmer cos of the baby there is no thermostat in the house the bloke that serviced boiler said we have a froststat not thermostat which he set to 0 and said u dnt need it on higher than that but im worried without a thermostat to cut it off at certain temperature if i put it on constant is it just going to be draining the oil all day and night until it runs out? thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

It's never cheaper to leave it on constantly, whether electric or oil heated. It's always much more expensive. You can read hundreds of other threads on that subject.
Given the minimal cost of a room 'stat (they start at about £15), it's crazy to have any CH system without one.
A frost 'stat at 0C is no use, it should be set at about 5C, to prevent the temp dropping near to the level where freezing will occur. I'm therefore wondering what the qualifications of your servicing 'bloke' were?No free lunch, and no free laptop

thanks for reply how would i install a thermostat it was definately cheaper in flat to have on constant though on timer cost me £35 a week when on constant cost me £25 a week. also i have 2 froststat one in shed one in bedroom he told me to not touch one in shed he has set it right but one in bedroom is one he set to 0 and said dont need to be on more than that.0 -
The temp in the shed will drop to 0 long before the one in the bedroom, and switch on the boiler. So the bedroo frost stat is rellay not doing anything.
A few fullstops, commas, and paragraphs would make it easier to read (and therefor answer) you post.
Sorry - I don't believe you saved money in the flat by turning on the heating for longer periods.... Were you comparing costs at times when the outside temperature was exactly the same? (clue: the answer is 'no'.)
To get warmer & save money:
* insulate the property
* draughtproof
* turn off rads and heat one room only
* buy larger quantities of oil. Cheaper.
* look for grants0 -
thanks for replying, are you aware of any grants at all?
I have asked job centre and apparently oil heating does not come under their 'list'. And is not something they pay out for, they say you have to budget for it, but £56 a week jsa and oil being £25 a week how they expect me to budget that out of £56 a week and save £300 for 500 litres before it runs out i will never know0 -

You buy one from a plumber's merchant and install it, or pay someone to do so for you.
Basic thermodynamics prove that it cannot possibly be cheaper to have the heating on constantly, unless your house is 100% insulated, and never loses any heat. Think about it, or browse the forum-there are dozens of threads on this topic (though the answer is always the same). But if you want to believe otherwise, then it's your money to burn (literally).No free lunch, and no free laptop
