Like I said, Norton is pretty good these days. It scores very highly in detection rates and is therefore a pretty safe option. My issue with it is purely with how resource intensive it is, vs other paid AVs like NOD32.

Though to be honest, even with the best AV in the world, you still need to apply good safe computing practices. Don't install random crap off the internet. Uninstall Java unless you need it, and if you do need it disable the browser plugin. Keep your stuff updated avoid Adobe products if there is an alternative available, don't click on the email link to reactivate your bank account and don't open the attachment from FedEx that comes along with a failed delivery notice for a parcel you wern't expecting.

Over the years, I have norton on 4-ish times, each time it was compromised within 2 to 6 months. Yes, fooled 4 times - shame on me! Been told most of these times beforehand "it is pretty good these days".

No other a/v has given me as many issues as Norton. Recently when I bought my new laptop, I could have ticked the box and got 2 years gratis, but would rather either have a second hand pickled rat in a bottle, or septic peg throwing her runes to ward of evil juju than put this product ever back on.

Personally i myself had free avast
    It did the job
However recently it said my free yr had run out..
I had try to uninstall and download from cnet again
Only there were avast files left i just can't delete..
So when i try to update new installation it say reboot..
I do and it say same thing repeatedly.
Ive had to go with avg cos avira failed to update..
Im now thinking. Its prob best just to pay for one if this fails.

Why did you not just follow the prompts to register again for the next 12mths of free use? No need to reinstall etc.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Except be aware to click the pale grey Update button rather than bold green one. ;)
  • What Lum said.

Any av does not mean you don't have to be sensible and careful. I question just what people are up to on the net if Norton isn't protecting you, and I mean the full Norton, not just the anti v.

Resource hog? hmmm, well, get a decent spec comp and it won't be a problem.

    Happy Days .

  • I would go with Norton. Have used free ones before and they always fail at somepoint. Paid AV is the best option for peace of mind. Use my laptop for work so just want to know it will be protected which it has been since using Norton.

to re-register avast after the year is up, you just right click on the avast icon, then click registration, the process is usually prompted regardless.
