20p disappears after Galaxy Note reboot
My Galaxy Note with stock ICS currently uses a Tesco PAYG sim with a text bundle.
It has had a couple of reboots lately, and when it comes back to life I am informed that my top-up balance has gone down by 20p each time.
I have Mobile Data disabled, sync disabled and am using WiFi when at home. Obviously if I'd made a phone call (which I never do unless it was an emergency) it would take money from my account, but I haven't done that at all.
I did phone Customer Service when I first noticed it and the lady said I'd tried to send a message internationally. I do not have any need to send ANYTHING internationally, so what could be doing this?
I don't run any dodgy apps (not even the dreaded Facebook ).
Any ideas? Anyone?

Do you have any software?
The Note will access the internet before it reads the configuration file that tells it to access the Wi-Fi so if you have no data pack on your PAYG plan then you will be charged the minimum charge for a small amount of data...Sounds like that is 20p.
I would recommend getting an Ovivo SIM which would give you 400MB of data to use each month and also give you 150 minutes and 150 texts. Texts are 5p once you exceed the free allowance.
If you text a lot then get a phone which isn't an Android as many phones will do that on start up.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.0 -
I go with the data on start up theory. My guess is some form of Google account authentication.
To test this theory create a dummy APN (one with the wrong settings for Tesco) and select it.
See if the 20p loss still happens.0 -

Hmm that sounds like a reasonable theory, although I'm always at home when on WiFi. Would it still be able to do what you suggest while Mobile Network Data and Background Sync are turned off?
The thing is that I usually DO use this PAYG sim in a non Android, non-smart phone simply for texting and because I'd topped up £15 recently I got the free triple credit + free 5000 texts bundle (which I usually buy for £5) for 30 days, so I swapped the sim into my unlocked Note to use the free credit on the internet if I found an opportunity (I haven't yet done so & time's running out  ).
I think I'll use the free credit up and get this thing back into my texting phone asap. Smart phones are obviously too smart and have minds of their own. I have a Three PAYG sim that I usually keep in the Note so that if I ever actually need to access the internet while I am briefly away from home I can for 50p/120MB per day.

Just to add Ovivo is free....yes ....I said free as in zero cost per month. Nothing at all..no one ever believes that something can be available for no ongoing cost but it is. Take advantage while you can. Save your 50p's.:footie:

I have a news widget on one of the home pages. It goes off to the internet every few hours and gets the latest headlines.
I also have the standard built in weather widget that gets the weather every hour or two.
Any one of them may have started and got an update before the Mobile Data config setting turns off mobile data.
Even Google Play Store gets an update every now and again.:footie:

Ah, I see. Well yes I suppose I do have those type of widgets or apps. Never thought about them phoning home without permission to use mobile data before.
Ok thanks again ....now looking at Ovivo with interest for intermittent use with the Galaxy Note. I presume you are with them & have had good service?0
