Most definitely not invest the money based on the opinions of a bunch of strangers on the Internet.

Find an IFA that is a good idea.

Why have you ruled this out?

As innovate says, I would not be risking my £500k on the advice of strangers on a forum. I would seek professional advice from an IFA - https://www.unbiased.co.uk is the place to go if you have no personal recommendations.

Ruled out as a good idea - I already have an appointement booked with an IFA.

I would not be taking any advice to invest, I was simply asking what other people would do.

e.g savings accounts, property, gold, shares

Ah right. I had read it as you had ruled out an IFA because it was not a good idea as opposed to ruling it out as you have already decided it is a good idea.

This sort of confusion can be easily avoided by writing in grammatically correct sentences rather than in shorthand/textspeak!

What a great position to be in - I think that I would consider a bunch of Investment Trusts or buy a property with plenty of land (they don't make it anymore :-))

The first thing I would do is to work out what I wanted the money for. For example:

    1) Lump sum to pay off debts
    2) Trade up my house in near future
    3) Short term spending
    4) Gift to children/charities now
    5) A steady income from now
    6) A steady income from say 20 years time taking early retirement.
    7) Bolster pension for when I retire at the standard age
    etc etc

Then I would split the £500K into tranches to meet each wish. If I didnt have the experience to do it myself I would consult an IFA to chose appropriate investments for each tranche. If you havent thought through what you want the money for in my view there is little point in talking to an IFA.

£300,000 in shares split between 30 companies £10,000 each
£50,000 in corporate bonds between 20 companies £5,000

Reasonable make up but surely 5% in cash?
