Before this thread I'd never even heard of a bitcoin. It's been brilliant being able to watch a bubble from start to finish in the space of a few days.

    This was just a blip.

I'll bet you a pricklecoin that the whole bitcoin experiment will unravel shortly. Recent events have shown it's neither a safe haven nor a currency. It's just a computer algorithm.

I think I'll stick to good old, unbacked, abused fiat currency. :)

What do people think about these?

Are they going to be a credible alternative to the current monetary system or will they go the same way as the Dutch Tulip frenzy?

They used to be discussed a lot on conspiracy/fringe websites but now are being discussed in mainstream 'papers' like The Guardian, Economist etc.

It's a scam in my view. There are other schemes like e-gold, Liberty Reserve etc. All scams. The only legal means of exchange are those authorised by national central banks.

Remind me the first rule of Ponzi schemes - is it to big up your own investment to the uninitiated inorder to facilitate your own cashout?

Graham, I am an authorised bitcoin market maker. Please send me your money by Western Union and I will not only invest in bitcoins on your behalf but for a limited time only I will hold the cons on your behalf saving you the normal storeage fee - can't say better than that can you.
    I think....

at least with a bitcoin ETF or whatevrer you're suggesting, I would be able to see for myself that you have actually bought the bitcoins for me.

unlike a gold ETF for example.

    It's great fun.

I much prefer Cluedo. Discovering Miss Scarlett in the library with a length of rope has always had its fascinations.
Living for tomorrow might mean that you survive the day after.
It is always different this time. The only thing that is the same is the outcome.
