Thanks for all the replies. I know that the most probable answer is the obvious one.

Just wanted to double check that it was up to her to contact her bank first so that it is simply a case of putting the onus on her to prove it or sort it out as she sees fit.

    Not necessarily.

You didn't answer the questions I asked earlier

How do you know the amount sent was only half of what it should have been? Are you looking at your available balance and find it lower than expected? Has there been another (outgoing) payment you did not allow for?

Apologies, intended to make a fuller reply but sleep caught up with me.

In answer to your questions -

My wife's internet banking shows the half amount received.

My daughter is away at Uni - the payment is a contribution out of her "grant" towards her rent. She does/did have internet banking but i'm sure she has commented about going into the bank to make the transfer in the past - no idea why.

We will be asking her to contact her bank and (depending on the result of that) for proof that she is telling the truth.

Don't know about RBS but you can certainly make faster payments in branch with some banks.

If she paid part of the remittance by cheque would that explain the problem here? Cheques are often not shown until they have cleared.

there are no previous indications that she would lie about such things.

Why on earth is this a matter of such urgency that it cannot wait until after the weekend?

This seems a very odd attitude towards an apparently trustworthy daughter?

Of course it can wait until after the weekend.

You just don't hear of many such "bank errors" in this electronic age, so I am suspicious but wanted to know which bank to check with first., and asked the question when i thought of it.

Always the bank where the payment was made.

If it was over the counter. Then hope she got a reciept.....

But before she goes steaming in....
Find out just what made up the payment if it was over the counter.
Cash = straight away (upto a cut off point)
Cheque = Maybe next working day, again subject to a cut off point.
May not actually hit your account till it has fully cleared.

So you really need to get the full story from your daughter 1st as to how, when, where & why.

Just my opinion here don't take offence or treat it as gospel - daughter is skint and can only afford to pay half the money owed.

If she sent say £200 by faster payment or standing order or over the counter then £200 would have been received.
Likewise if she sent £400 - then £ 400 would have got to parents account.

As I say just my opinion.

Most probable explanation, but no history and want to give her the benefit of the doubt until we know otherwise.
