If you are made of money try these -

The fact that the battens extend round the side mean they are much more sturdy and won't sag. You can also cot them to size/angle if your corners aren't exactly square.

Of course if you are decent at DIY, then you could do the same for a fraction of the cost - battens all round - plywood/mdf or similar top and bottom, and a piece accross the front. Easy!

thanks but that is definitely out of my budget.

does anyone know if the ikea one is solid wood, Just trying to find out if i can easily cut it to correct length or not?

The piece of metal inside the shelf is almost the full length of the shelf, so you wouldn't be able to cut them.

Why couldn't you cut metal? Thats what a hacksaw is for....

Even the Ikea ones sag when your kids have spent years sticking piles of comics/annuals on them, regardless of the surface they're attached to.

Isn't there some sort of method to conceal battens in an alcove.

The ikea ones are chipboard with veneer on the outside.

    Make your own.

I would have to agree with this comment.

It's not too hard to make shelves for an alcove. Even if you are not a DIY'er a joiner should be able to make one without much bother, or indeed expense.

All you need is the timber for the actual shelf, or maybe plywood or veneer covered MDF and some 2" x 1" planed timber, to use as battens.

Fit the battens to the sides and back of the alcove and if you are going to be loading the shelf with any great weight, add another batten to the front of the shelf.

When painted, or stained everything will look good and 'made for the job' rather than a shelf a few inches or whatever short.

tried to look at B&Q, wickes, tesco but things get very mixed review and many say the shelves "lean forward".

Do you think the reviewers have placed them on a carpet where grip rods run adjacent to the skirting? Any bookshelf or cabinet placed like that will lean forward as the front sinks into the carpet below the level of the grip rods, which are under the rear of the shelf.

Answer - add small feet to the front, even if not supplied by the maker.

I want to do exactly the same

I've been looking at this website:

    It sounds so easy....

I might take a few days off work and try it
