hi
after some shelving for an alcove in bedroom. because its in a bedroom i want decent looking ones ideally want those floating ones with hidden brackets. anyone know where to find decent ones which can take some decent weight e.g. few files/ DVD etc.
tried to look at B&Q, wickes, tesco but things get very mixed review and many say the shelves "lean forward". also the size seems to be a problem as my alcove is 90 cm wide. most standard sizes seem to be 80 or 100 or 110 cm long.
was very keen on ikea book case but their standard size is 50 cm or 100 cm.
any other ideas for alcove shelving also welcome.

I've inherited some Ikea ones and they are very sturdy.0

forget floating shelves if you intend putting anything heavy on them...0

Have fitted a few floating shelves, and the best ones are from Ikea. Very easy to fit and sturdy. Got asked to fit one purchased from Argos, and it was un-sturdy and slanted towards the floor.0

dont forget especially with regards to floating shelves that the amount of weight they take will depend on what the wall is made of they are attached to. if its plaster board it will be a lot less that brick.0

+1 for Ikea ones - the brackets seem stronger with more available fixing points than Argos ones I've had.0 -
We've just put up the floating ikea shelves, if they are screwed into brick they hold 15kg which is a fair few books!0

thanks for the replies.
i was very keen on ikea ones but the problem is that they are 110cm long while i need only about 85 cm. not sure if i can cut it!
I am fixing the shelves to a solid wall i think!. if you imagine the stairs going up in a house, the wall is the one in bedroom which vertically "stops" above the stairs ceiling. i think it must be a solid wall. dont really know how to check it apart from knocking it on the wall and listening to the sound0 -
If you are made of money try these -

The fact that the battens extend round the side mean they are much more sturdy and won't sag. You can also cot them to size/angle if your corners aren't exactly square.
Of course if you are decent at DIY, then you could do the same for a fraction of the cost - battens all round - plywood/mdf or similar top and bottom, and a piece accross the front. Easy!
