BT New phone line and Broadband

I use a mobile internet and mobile phone provider at present but want to use Smart TV so I tried to order a phone line and Broadband from BT (I know... I should know better at my age)
I ordered the "Free for six months" broadband package a a new phone line (paid in advance to save cash) on 15th March.
I had a confirmation email and an on-line confirmation giving all the correct details and an order number.
I heard nothing for seven days so I emailed to ask why. Two days after that (23rd March) I got a phone call from Bombay to say they could find no trace of my order! I could order a new package, BUT guess what, the free for six months offer no longer exists and its now £8 a month for the first 12 months.
I have tried to cancel my order but you can't do that on the phone unless you have a BT phone number. I dont have one because that's what my order was for! I haven't paid them anything yet anyway.
I had a bad feeling about using BT and my fears have been confirmed , a bunch of incompetents who have not lost the state-run monopoly mentality. I suppose I shouldn't worry about cancelling the order as they have "lost" it anyway. I have also had to cancel the order for the Smart TV though.
