HMRC Land Transaction Return Tax Letter

I've just received a letter from HMRC in the post & as the solicitor is closed til Monday thought I would seek advice here.
We completed on our house purchase & moved in early Feb. today we have received a letter from HMRC Stamp Office requesting payment of £300 as they have received the Land Transaction Return. The assessed tax was £8805.
We weren't expecting this & had assumed that all outstanding fees such as Stamp duty etc were all paid for by our solicitor as there was equity from the sale of the previous house.
The guidance notes with the letter only relate to penalties & this payment is listed as tax & not a penalty or interest demand.
Any help is much appreciated.

Dig out your completion statement and also your solicitor's quote.
This could either be a shortfall in the SDLT paid, or more likely it is a penalty for late payment. If is a penalty, you should expect your solicitor to pick up the bill. Especially if they charged separately for filling in the SDLT form. You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0 -
Thanks VH, will try & find the final bill. I just wasn't sure if this was the norm & our last house purchase was 15 years previously.0
