  • In our last house our gas was only 10 a month the house was mid terrace and 1987. would never drop below 16c and would take an hour to get to 20c. We moved just before winter last year to 1960s semi house and gas bill is now 80 a month and we have heating set to 17c and house will drop to 13c when off and take about 4hrs to get to 17c

trv's if working properly should never need to be on max unless you want the rooms to be over 25 degrees C

Nice to hear from someone who has been in 2 very different houses with very different heating factors.

Glad you got it up to temperature. As far as i know though, underfloor does take longer. Nice apartment! Hope you got some good views.

Never been a fan of TRV's, being sited normally, near to the floor. Dont know for sure, but think they are better suited to new-ish buildings where the floor temp is more representitive and consistant to that of the room (at sitting level) temperature.
Surprised how some houses lose so much temperature. At an outside temp of 0C when the thermostat stops heating to 21C at 10.30pm, by 5.30am it has dropped to about 12/13C downstairs and 14/15C upstairs in this house. Bring wind into the equation and its cools down more, especially the attic.
  • Our heating went off with faulty boiler in the worst of this winter so far and we had to live with temperatures of -6 to +3 for a week with a heater in two rooms. The walls seemed to get very cold and it took a full 2 days after the central heating was back on again for the house to be fully warm througout, but our home is a drafty place. I think it depends on the construction, size of rooms, size of radiators AND how high the heating is on.

    Hi northernsoul

I ended up putting the fan heater on a couple of hours ago for about ten minutes as I really felt chilly

Now after having the oven on for half an hour, my room is 24 degrees. What usually happens now is that I put the heating off and the temperature continues to rise...

Some thoughts. Our house (100y terrace) takes about 2 hours to heat up from 8C to 18C on return from a holiday.

    1. Never put a TRV on "max" - that's not how they are designed to work and you won't get any benefit from having them there.
    2. Keeping heating on 24/7 is not cost-effective. Lots of discussions on here have demonstrated the reasons why. If you were right, you'd leave your (non-Aga) oven on 24/7 as well.
    3. We set our thermostat to be 18 and sometimes push it temporarily to 19/20 if we want to. Jumpers are cheaper than heating. Every degree costs increasingly more.
    4. Close attic room doors and turn down their TRV if not in use- then the room can function as an insulating barrier.

I have heating on a max of 2 hours/day, when it's really freezing. Rest of the time I am under a blanket putting up with it. That's how I've always been with heating - it's a luxury... except right now as where I am now it's included ... ooooohhhhhhhh my ..... never had full/proper heating before. It's lovely.
