I wouldn't worry with answers that don't have a highlighted square in them ... just complete them if you need some letters for a clue you are stuck on.

you need to take a clue and think, go away and think and then sometimes it pops in your head.

i cant read the clues i am afraid but with the one given so far the first bit could be public as public house is a bar and then the house word could change slightly to link in with the crazy bit - (ie mad house) if that makes sense!

I am getting much better at them recently and now get about 70% a cryptic complete when before it might be 2 and they were wild guesses

Ahh I see now, thank you all for explaining and a big thanks for Fire**fly for coming to the rescue with the answer. I think I will have a go at it on the weekend in case one crops up in the future. Ive always wanted to be able to do them but never known how to. A big thanks to you all :T

I can't do cryptics either - mind you I'm not so hot on scrabble either even though I have an A at O level english language

Alison, please don't feel you have to attempt a puzzle that isn't your thing. We are all so grateful for what you do here with the other puzzles.

I really like doing cryptics. They are hard, and I won't promise how far I will get, but I have C&P the grid and clues - In Word I zoomed on the clues to make them readable. Give me the weekend and I will see what I can do. Clearly there are a few of us working on this - we are a team after all.

TBH, I would never mind trying to help with a cryptic puzzle. Feel free to post for help anytime and/or pm me.

A good way to learn how to solve cryptic crosswords is The Sun. their crosswords have two sets of clues cryptic and coffee time, but both have the same answers. So you can use both clues to help. It helps you to understand how cryptic clues are constructed. With practice you will find you look at the coffee time less and less. Or crosswords may not be your thing ... don't force yourself to do something unless you enjoy it. I love scrabble and crosswords, so always happy to try and help, purely for fun!
