I made this for a friend using a wooden box from Hobbycraft and some "anita's" acrylic paints and various stencils. Lined it with pale blue silky fabric.
Ideal for keeping things like scan photos and special nik-naks in.

Also Muslin sqaures are good for filling out baskets - I have just bought some
packs from sainsburys. Only £3 - I think I got 2 per pack.

I got muslin squares for my baby boy in Tesco, and they were £4.97 for a pack of 5 I think. They are a godsend for protecting clothes (whoever is doing the carrying or winding), and dry in no time!

Thank you all again for your posts - lots of lovely ideas.

Well, so far with freebie hunting, voucher/code/points spending, a bit of recycling/charity shopping etc, I've got over £60 worth of bits for £11 :D There's so much I'm now packing it into a baby bath rather than a basket, lol.

I have a couple of pieces left that I'd like to get - will cost about £20-£30 if I'm careful, and then, scarily enough, I'm already done.

I say scarily, as I know it means I'll spend the next few months adding 'just this one more thing' and will end up spending a fortune - but it's not every day you have your first baby is it.

What about a newspaper from the day the baby is born (easier to do if s/he is born in the daytime!), I saved a couple of papers when my little brothers were born, I wish I'd also bought them the number one songs too.
Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!
  • My brother and his finance packed out a babybath with all sorts of bits and pieces from poundland and cost around £20 in total, sorry cant exactly say whats in there.

I have started one for my cousin and have so far got:

    7 pack of bibs
    7 pack of vests
    2 pack sratch mitts
    hooded towel and wash cloth

all from primark, come to £11

    baby bowl and plate

    from adsa, reduced to 79p

still hunting for bargains going to buy a little bit each month until baby is born, next payday I am going to check out poundland! you all have great ideas so I will keep looking at this thread! Like the idea of the babysitting vouchers though!
finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!

Poundland have lots of baby type bits in at the moment - brush and comb, feeding spoons, bowls etc.

There was also a free dvd on here somewhere called Chatter Matters - think you have to pay the postage but on the back the price is 9.99.
  • just seen a freebie on this site for aquados washing powder, think washing powder may come in handy for all those baby clothes that will need frequent washing, so have ordered some to put in the baby box!

sorry cant get the link at the moment!

also good news for me, Ive been donated a babybath so going to put all the bits Ive got into that for my cousin :)

Just thought I'd give this a quick bump, as I realised I've missed something.

I have plenty for baby and Mum, but nothing for Dad.

Any thoughts? Nothing gimmicky (he's not a 'who's the daddy' type of chap), but something he can appreciate.

    :)
