No we don't pay him rent - we have no income as we gave up our business to care full time for him.
We are looking ahead to a time when perhaps he is so aggressive it's not possible to stay with us. Hopefully it won't come to that, but who knows. So I can't say if that happens will he be capable of saying he does/doesn't want to go into care.

The reason I ask about his willingness or otherwise to go into a home is important. If someone is deemed to be a danger to themselves or others but refuses to go into care then they can be sectioned which is not as awful as it sounds but just means that they can be moved into an appropriate care setting. However for this discussion his care would then be free.

Does he get AA as it certainly sounds like he should and then one of you would be able to get carer's allowance.

Really sorry to hear about your father's deterioration and dementia which is a terrible disease.

Can I ask a couple of questions if Social Services did an assessment of his need what are they suggesting as options to help support in the home?

Maybe with more support you can manage this in his own home with you and your husband possibly? Although there might be care charges perhaps these can be more easily met from his pension. I am sure the Social Worker will have done a benefits check as part of the assessment so will have recommended applying for AA if he is not already in receipt of it?

Finding a good quality care home for dementia can be very difficult, a lot of them are very basic.

Also the http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/ can possibly give further support and advice.

Another thought, does anyone have power of attorney for him?

Both my husband & I are 50. I presumed Dad would be self funding in the care home as he has a private pension & owns his own home. So the social worker is wrong in our case, the house would have to be sold? The social worker said we wouldn't be out on the street, but clearly we would!

There is a degree of discretion when people have been living in the home as carers and your local council can use this discretion to allow you to remain in the home.

You need to discuss the various scenarios with your dad's social worker.

For instance they could allow you to live in the home but place a charge on the property in th event of your dad's death (sorry)

Or it may be possible for you to start working, pay 'rent' and with any savings that your dad may have, plus his pension(s) and AA that the care home fees can be met.

Without knowing the full picture it is difficult to say.

You also need to think about Power of Attorney (if your dad is mentally fit to agree to this)

You may find your council allow you to stay in the house and they will fund your dad's care (if he has under £23000 (ish) in savings.

You should also investigate Continuing Health Care. The Alzheimers Society are able to support you if you need further help.

I wish you all the best.
