  • Could you not combine the amounts you get for all of them and do a private lease on a vehicle?

We have 3 children who all have a diagnosis of Autism and all 3 receive lower rate component of mobility. I understand you need to receive the higher rate of mobility to get a motability car but have heard of people appealing and getting a car while on the lower rate being in a similar situation as we are. Does anybody have any experience of this or know of how we may go about appealing to motability to get a car.
The only way you can get 'motability' is if you are on the higher rate mobility DLA just as others here have said. Any appeal would be to DLA and is nothing to do with 'motability'.

    As Richie-from-the-Boro has stated:
they can't even consider looking at it as a group
    - a reconsideration can reduce / increase / or do nothing
Remember that if you decide to appeal their decision on lower mobility DLA they may decide to remove LRM altogether. This is a risk you take if you go down that route.

I appreciate that it is difficult with all three children having difficulties with their condition but I would be very surprised if they took this into consideration as a 'group' and would only make a decision on individual claimants. Every 'individual' has to meet their criteria for HRM.

I appealed their decision a few years ago when I was awarded LRM and it went to tribunal where I won and was awarded HRM. When appealing I knew that there was a risk that I could lose the appeal and they could have removed the mobility award. It was very stressful but I appealed as I felt very strongly that I met the criteria for HRM and based on that they had made the wrong decision.

You may wish to consider getting a car (second hand) based on the accumilated rate you receive of LMR for the 3 children as you get more than the total of one person receiving HRM.
    Mobility component

Mobility component Weekly rate Level of help you need Lower £20.55 Guidance or supervision outdoors Higher £54.05 You have any other, more severe, walking difficulty
As you can see from this, for the three children you are recieving £61.65 a week. = £246.60 every 4 weeks whereas 1 person gets £216.20 mobility every 4 weeks. Surely you could get a good second hand car based on that.

Also, I take it that you wouldn't need any adaptations made to the car. As a driver I needed adaptations which are costly (if you decide to buy a car rather than go down motability route) if you decide to buy a car as I did. Fitting the adaptations were an extra cost.

I've been trying to work out my entitlement to tax credits for the next financial year but can’t find any income limits for a 2-parent family with 3 kids (2 are disabled on middle rate DLA). .

My hat goes off to the OP for managing to cope with 3 Autistic children. I found one difficult enough to care for with other non- spectrum children. This is truly relentless and a great strain to family life and personal relationships so i can understand why they are looking for funding help.

We found there aren't really any charities outside of Motability who can offer their type of service. There are other charities that wil
Offer help/ small scale funding / loans for other equipment. Perhaps if youwere able to access this support it could free up some of your income and leave you with enough for a vehicle?

Motability may be able to point you in the direction of charities that can help with small vehicle grants as I believe they can be accessed to fund APs for their scheme.

RE the DLA levels for their children in previous threads about benefits they have confirmed they are in receipt of Medium Care. Care level is usually the part of DLA that is relevant for benefits. In this post the OP has stated the children get Low rate Mobility. In th context of this discussion re Motability that is the pertinent benefit level for this topic. I can't see any discrepancy here?

I hope the OP can get some signposting from MSEers for the help he/she needs.

In his financial statement on the other thread there was no mention of LRM for 3 children only MRC for 2. I would of thought it would be pertinent to mention both awards in a financial statement while asking for help.

Edit: The OP actually states 'middle rate DLA' for 2 children. Is this care or mobility? Either way he has changed his story and things get confusing.

Really? You need to re-read both threads again
  • .1. - At 1:15 PM on the 01-03-2012 Elvis216 had - 2 - kids on middle rate DLA ? something ?
    .2. - At 10:22 AM on the 22-03-2013 Elvis216 had - 3 - kids on low mobility DLA
.3. - At 9:33 PM on the 22-03-2013 Elvis216 had - 3 kids with Autism - no mention of Care or Mobility DLA rate

Somewhere between 1:15 PM on the 1st Feb this year and 10:22 AM on the 22nd of Feb this year the family went from 2 kids on middle rate DLA ? something ? to 3 kids on low rate mobility DLA.

Poppie68, & only_mee, are correct - M00minMama - is wrong - no where in Elvis216's previous threads has a mention of 'Medium Care', nor does Elvis216 ever mention DLA care at all.

  • We have 3 boys two with Autism and ADHD and one with severe ADHD only. I'm afraid you have no chance of receiving a motability car, Sorry but they would have to be in receipt of higher rate mobility with a condition where they are unable too or virtually unable to walk.
    Mortgage: Aug 12 £114,984.74 - Jun 14 £94000.00 = Total Payments £20984.74

For a small family car you should be able to get some decent contract lease deals for the equivalent of 3 x LRM awards.

For example, for an initial payment of £1200 + monthly payments of £205 you could get a 5 door ford focus 1.6 zetec. The rest of the DLA could go towards insurance and tax.

Or for an initial payment of £600 + monthly payments of £200 you could get Peugeot 308 1.6 HDI.

Good luck with the appeal but even if it fails. there are still options out there.
if i had known then what i know now
