recorded delivery delay

Options
I sent a letter by "signed for" recorded delivery - first class on Tuesday and it still has not been delivered - according to the royal fail "track and trace" it is being progressed through our network for delivery.
What does this mean ?

It means what it says really, its in the system waiting to be delivered. Recorded delivery letters go with the normal 1st class post, they aren't 'fast tracked' or anything, if you wanted guaranteed delivery you could have used special delivery.

Surely "normal" 1st class should be delivered next day !!

Or at most the day after. If you posted Tuesday then it should have arrived no later than yesterday. (Is my understanding).

Of course things happen (such as weather conditions). As Beanie said - Special delivery is the only guaranteed next-day delivery.

1st Class post used to mean next day, however nowthey say please allow upto 3 days.

    So, it should arrive today.

Do you know the person the letter was sent to to confirm delivery?

RM rarely update recorded signed for online so you may find it has actually already been delivered.

The message you are seeing online will continue even if it has been delivered.

Ist class delivery dates are just targets, it can take up to 15 working days for 1st class to be delivered and only after this time will a letter be regarded as lost.

No I don't know the person - I know OF the person though !!
What is the point of paying for recorded delivery to get a signature if RM don't actually meet this ?

You have got it !! There is no point especially if you are sending to a large corporate entity, it will just get shoved in the bag with all the rest. The only truly signed for mail is SD. Just go onto the eBay board to see the general opinion of Signed For. If it is for serving of papers etc the best method is proof of delivery from 2 different post offices as it will be deemed to be delivered.

Rarely is a bit of an exaggeration but its correct that not all recorded delivery items are signed for and those will never update on the system.

You can actually claim back the recorded part of the cost of delivery if they fail to get a signature. But the others are correct that you certainly shouldn't rely on getting a signature these days.

With the current system there is no point at all in using recorded as in many areas it is not signed for. There may be plans to change this when the system has a slight overhaul on April 2nd and recorded then carries compensation up to £50 for loss as opposed to £20 for standard mail.
