I sent a letter by "signed for" recorded delivery - first class on Tuesday and it still has not been delivered - according to the royal fail "track and trace" it is being progressed through our network for delivery.
What does this mean ?

It means what it says really, its in the system waiting to be delivered. Recorded delivery letters go with the normal 1st class post, they aren't 'fast tracked' or anything, if you wanted guaranteed delivery you could have used special delivery.

Surely "normal" 1st class should be delivered next day !!0 -
Or at most the day after. If you posted Tuesday then it should have arrived no later than yesterday. (Is my understanding).
Of course things happen (such as weather conditions). As Beanie said - Special delivery is the only guaranteed next-day delivery.0 -
1st Class post used to mean next day, however nowthey say please allow upto 3 days.
So, it should arrive today.0 -

Do you know the person the letter was sent to to confirm delivery?
RM rarely update recorded signed for online so you may find it has actually already been delivered.
The message you are seeing online will continue even if it has been delivered.
Ist class delivery dates are just targets, it can take up to 15 working days for 1st class to be delivered and only after this time will a letter be regarded as lost.0 -

With the current system there is no point at all in using recorded as in many areas it is not signed for. There may be plans to change this when the system has a slight overhaul on April 2nd and recorded then carries compensation up to £50 for loss as opposed to £20 for standard mail.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
