Warm downstairs but freezing upstairs.

I was hoping somebody could help me. I have recently bought a house and because of the wonderful (cold) British climate we have had the heating on alot over the past few months. The living room and kitchen downstairs get nice and toasty but as soon as i walk up the stairs i can feel the air getting colder and colder. The master bedroom and bathroom upstairs are freezing cold although the radiators are hot. Our second bedroom does not seem to be as cold as the other two rooms but still noticably colder than downstairs. We have double glazed windows all over the house and have had newly layed loft insulation. Does anybody have any advice on why this is so?

Suspect the upstairs rads are undersized for the space they are trying to heat.

Maybe the boiler is too small. My parents had CH installed many years ago, then later on had their loft converted, adding three new rooms. the boiler never really had enough power to heat everywhere.
Another possible cause ... airlocks tot he upstairs radiators ... after all air will rise.
get a radiator key form a local DIY shop (£2 or so) and unscrew the wee airlock screws (carefully !!) to let air escape. I say open carefully, you don't want to remove the screw, just loosen it slightly, so you can tighten it again when the air stops coming out and is replaced by hot water.0 -

Thanks, I never even thought of this :embarasse (doh! being a newbie home owner) Makes sence. Our bedroom is directly above and the same size as our living room. The radiators are the same width but the one in the bedroom is alot shallower.0 -
Try bleeding and balancing your rads0

We attempt to bleed our radiators fairly often as we thought this may be a problem. Everytime no or very little air trapped inside.0

More info reqd, boiler type, make size?
How old is the house and original installation, older systems were sized just for background heat, age dependant?
Has the system been off for a long time?Signature removed0 -
The heating system has been off as the house has been empty for around a year before we bought it. I forgot to mention that it is constantly colder upstairs, even when the weather is warmer and the heating is off. Could this possibly be from draft from a window or similar? Although i have checked with a candle, no drafts seem to be apparent.0
