Googlemail, is it possible to get a password we need off them.

Options
Sadly, our son passed away sudenly 6 weeks ago and we are trying to get his affairs in order. He had wrote down many passwords which have helped, but the one we do not have is to his gmail account. We think having access to his emails will help us tie things up. Cannot seem to find a uk phone number for googlemail, but would they give us the information we need.
Thanks

Very sorry to hear of your loss, but have you access to his PC/Phone ? If so you may be able to access his emails anyway without the password, just an idea really, good luck.

Your son may have registered a recovery email address or phone number for his Gmail password to be sent to if he lost it. So a simple suggestion is to try the "forgotten my password" options and see if the password can be sent to his phone number or an alternate email address.

He did not use a mobile and the house phone number would be at his rented flat that we cleared. We have 6 hard drives that were taken out of his computer lying here. It might be a good idea to try.. the forgot my password option. i'll give that a go, thanks

It does not seem that straightforward....when I put don't know my password it comes up with.....To reset your password, enter the username you use to sign in to Google. This can be your Gmail address or it may be another email address that you've associated with your account. When I put don't know my username it comes up with..... enter a recovery email address, you may have added this when you signed up to gmail and when I put in our email address, is says this address already exists, use this username.

Do you know his email address?

If so then the username will likely be the email address minus the @gmail.com

Hi, I've done that but it says the following......Get a verification code (via SMS) on my phone: •••••••••44

so obviously at some point he has used a mobile phone with 44 being the last 2 digits

Probably this is going to be the answer but will take quite a while to sort out.

Yes, it looks like he has registered that phone number as one of the recovery options for the email account.

The problem you are going to have is convincing Google to give you access to the account. Even if you sent them his death cert, how are they to know that the "John Smith" named on the certificate is the same "John Smith" who owns the email address.
